This past February, over the course of ten days Poland's most adventurous music festival UNSOUND came to New York for the first time. Its program included club-oriented electronic music, indie rock, free improvisation, ambient music and contemporary classical work performed by a diverse cast of domestic and international musicians including, for the first time in New York, a large number of East European artists appearing in New York for the first time from the East.

UNSOUND FESTIVAL NEW YORK was widely praised by both punters enthusiasts and press. The New York Times summed up festival aesthetic as “high-tech, elusive and not to be pinned down,” Time Out New York declared it “innovative,” whilst Urb said “Unsound Festival New York proved to be a rousing success.”
Now we're pleased to announce UNSOUND FESTIVAL NEW YORK will be back in New York from Wednesday April 6th to Sunday April 10th 2011. Building on its first year, the festival will again feature a broad range of acts in a wide range of contexts. The 2011 festival will also continue the engaging East meets West dialogue explored in 2010. Exact line-up details, including news of new work commissioned especially for festival, will be announced in the coming months.

Preceding Unsound Festival New York will be a special series of workshops, discussions and experimental events to be presented under the UNSOUND LABS banner that will run from Saturday, April 2nd to Monday, April 4th, 2011.

Making its USA premiere at Unsound Festival will be a new Unsound-commissioned project by Ben Frost & Daníel Bjarnasson, with “film manipulations” by Brian Eno and Nick Robertson. The ambitious project will celebrate the 50th anniversary (2011) of the publication of Krakow writer Stanislaw Lem’s novel Solaris and will feature Frost / Bjarnasson collaborating with Sinfonietta Cracovia, one of Poland's leading orchestras. The orchestra will also perform in a number of other events during Unsound Festival New York 2011.

Written for 29 string players, 2 percussionists, prepared piano, guitars and electronics, Music For Solaris has its beginnings in both Lem's original novel and the 1972 film adaptation by Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky. It is a re-imagined soundtrack for a film so still as to become almost absent, a story in sound, and an exploration of an interior cosmos. It is music written by human beings, removed and mutated by machine intelligence, then translated once more by human beings.

Integral to the project are a series of "film manipulations" by Brian Eno and Nick Robertson, drawing on moments from the original Tarkovwsky film to create a visual parallel to the music composition process. The performance will also mark the release of the album Music For Solaris.

Unsound Festival New York 2011 will be presented by Fundacja Tone, the Polish Cultural Institute in New York and the Goethe-Institut New York, in cooperation with Krakow City Council and Krakow Festival Office, Trust for Mutual Understanding, Austrian Cultural Forum, Wordless Music, The Bunker and others.

Meanwhile, Krakow's UNSOUND FESTIVAL will take place between October 17th and October 24th, with events taking place in unique and unexpected venues across Krakow, from the Old Town to fringe industrial areas. This year Unsound has constructed its 2010 Krakow program around the theme of Horror – “The Pleasure of Fear and Unease”. The festival will explore the way that music and sound interact with visual images in horror films, and present artists inspired by horror film music. Other artists will perform music that causes feelings of fear or and disquiet.

Performances include the Music For Solaris; Italian band Goblin, with Claudio Simonetti in the line up; legendary sound artist Lustmord for his second live show in almost three decades; the French duo Zombie Zombie performing the songs of film director John Carpenter; Alan Howarth, legendary sound designer and composer who worked with John Carpenter in the 80s; Belgian theatre collective Abbattoir Ferme's neo-gothic ghost story about model & Manson gang member Leslie Van Houten set to the music of Kreng; a special "Nesst” installation by Mordant Music; bleak metal / noise bands Norwegian Shining and Monno; a new trio featuring Hildur Guonadottir and Stars of The Lid's Adam Wiltzie; the live debut of a new project from Falty DL & Cosmin TRG; Norwegian ambient / experimental musician Elegi; the band Emeralds; the Polish debuts of Joy Orbison, the Moritz Von Oswald Trio, Actress (live), the mysterious Oni Ayhun and James Blake; as well as Shackelton, Lindstrom, Tim Hecker, Oneohtrix Point Never, Kyle Hall, Mount Kimbie, Demdike Stare and other acts, panels and workshops. Unsound Krakow 2010 is organized within the framework of the Norwegian Financial Mechanism, in partnership with Insomnia Festival in Tromso and Reykjavik Round-Up, as well as Berlin’s Club Transmediale.
