To identify a artists music genre

When you wan't to know which genre or influences that particular artist has but don't know? I know artists develops over time and change genres in line with their career but even though Tiesto drives Electro sound today or similar he is still labeled as a Trance artist/dj by many.
For example, 808 State. What would you guys call them? Electronic, acid house or techno artists, if you would summarize them in one genre?
Discogs is too messy right and allmusic isn't that good either.
Any alternatives?

Well i tend to, at least in my head, associate artists with their time period and related artists, so 808 state becomes sorta a 90s UK thing with links to the IDM scene.
I guess this doesn't help much. For many artists it's hard to summarize them in just one genre. |
