Ugh... Sucker Punch sucked SOOOO BAD!

My wife and I saw Sucker Punch today, and WOW... can't believe I wasted the cash to see that e in IMAX.
The good: Soundtrack is pretty good... in fact, the film kind of feels like it started with a few songs and tried to write a screeplay around it. CG fight scenes aren't bad, although they feel repetitive.
The Bad: Acting is mediocre at best. No plot or character development. Basically no reason to care about any of the characters and what happens to them.
The Ugly: This may be the first nominee for a Razzie, particularly in the Worst Screenplay category. This film is an example of why high school English teachers frown upon 90% of graphic novels. While not going into details (don't want to spoil it for anyone), I really can't get past Zack Snyder and Steve Shibuya trying to convince viewers that it's completely rational for a young girl to cope with a stressful situation by drifting into a WHOREHOUSE fantasy... Really!?!
Stupid movies can be redeemable by being fun - Just look at almost anything Leslie Nielsen did in the last 20 years of his career. Sucker Punch isn't even fun. I can't even blame the actors for poor performances - they just weren't given anything to work with.
The Bottom Line: This film is softcore porn for fanboys. Take 5 scantily clad hot girls and put them in video game scenarios. It'll make a great game - but it's a ty movie! I could have sworn that I saw Pedobear make a single frame appearance a la the early stages of Fight Club. |

What do graphic novels have to do with this? Also, they teach graphic novel courses in university now. They're quickly becoming a well respected literary form. |

Keep in mind that I said HIGH SCHOOL English teachers, who are more conservative in their tastes than university English profs. There are still very few English teachers that will use graphic novels for study, even in independent study units. Usually the reasons revolve around poor plot progression, lack of depth in character development, cliched, hackneyed writing style, and an overall presentation that has an ADHD sensibility. Basically, the same reason why the Toronto Sun is not accepted as an academic source on projects after Grade 6.
Obviously, some people are very sensitive about their graphic novels. There are good ones out there. Frank Miller is the master. Watchmen is a classic and well worth studying. There are plenty of others that are also worth analyzing for their contemporary view on the human condition. Sucker Punch is written like the worst of graphic novels, about as subtle as a sledgehammer with little wit, intelligence or insight. |

| This movie was supposed to have loud noises and cool CGI, everything else is a bonus. This was evident from the trailer. If you expected character development and good acting you were likely naive in your expectations :) |

| I wasn't expecting another Watchmen, but I was expecting a film with something more than a plot that was written on a cocktail napkin. I've seen porn movies from the 70s with a more coherent plot. And I'm still pretty sure that Pedobear makes a guest appearance. |

I can't tell based on what you've written, but were you aware that graphic novels aren't limited to super-hero content? I've read a number that act as, essentially, autobiographical journals dealing with child abuse, cultural studies of North Korea, dealing the aftermath of 9/11, gay/lesbian issues, and more. The only thing a graphic novel is that differentiates it from other novels is that it's using a visual element to tell it's story, in no way does that mean it'll be an inferior product or that it'll meet any of the faults you've listed above. Hell, I've read significantly more novels that have all those things than I have graphic novels. |

I'll speak to this point for the last time, since I did discuss this already. There are good graphic novels and there are e graphic novels. Let's use the bell curve here, people... 10 percent are brilliant, everything that you've described above, 10 percent are drek, and 80% are average - just like print novels. And, like I already stated, my opinion is that Sucker Punch represents what sucks about mediocre graphic novels.
And yes, my wife did want to see this. I thought the concept was interesting, but I was exceptionally disappointed with the execution. |
