The pebbles never crushed the same way snow peas did when his fingers would course over their ridges before popping them like pimples, but the bus sure made it sound like they did as it lurched over them while making a three-point turn to squirm its way out of the cul-de-sac. Mid-November had this way of populating the lungs and only coming out when he felt this inner rush of gas burble over and filter through his teeth.

Phonics class hadn't been the same since she came in, half-way through the semester with her formica fingernails and illegally powdered cheekbones. Clutching her books against her chest in a permanent Heimlich maneuver it was though the floor was lava to her as she took pensive staccato steps toward what was to be her new desk. Directly next to his. At first he thought nothing of it, new girl, new city, same effervescence to her hair as all of them. Same awkwardly protruding clavicle that seemed to beckon answers to questions she hadn't quite formulated yet.
Then there were those wellsprings which anyone else would have considered eyes.
Up until this point he hadn't thought much of music theory. He was in band, in fact, they were even learning the recorder this year in music class so he had developed a firm understanding of tone and pitch but up until this point the niche jargon hadn't twisted its way up his cortex into any useful mental habitat. Instead he was far more content to let it linger in a terrarium somewhere next to inexplicable dates and history footnotes that he'd occasionally poke at from the other side of the glass.
But her stride was like quarter notes at a constant one hundred and forty five beats per minute. She tripped over herself a lot and many of her books would rustle about, without any subtle bass structure to their tumbles, which made it sound occasionally like she was scampering much faster than her timid toes would allow. Her pepto colored lipstick was no longer able to douse the burning embers of his puberty.
Rushing home he got straight to work.
And ten years later he's on TA posting this thread still adorned in his Spaceman Spiff screen T and has his hands on a Robert Miles restraining order.
