i think it's going to be a solid movie. it's going to be like 'Biutiful'. sure the movie looks like it tried too hard to have a deep meaning, but overall i enjoyed the film. :p

Biutiful was very disappointing imo.

but, sean penn always annoys me, he's like the cowgirl in the toy story films

He did a great job directing Into the Wild.

it was a step lower to his past movies, and gonzalez innnaritu is turning into a one trick pony, but i still liked the movie. it may have been stretched too long at the end, but otherwise, i liked the whole flow of the movie. i am giving him one more chance to do something new, or i am going to lose faith in the guy's vision.

i was really disappointed in this movie.

i have a feeling my opinion here is the minority (big surprise). so i'll just leave some of the comments i made about the film on my facebook after seeing it.

"Tree of life was like looking at a motivational poster slash norman rockwell painting with brad pitt trying to explain it in a texan accent for 3 hours"

"all the universe in a grain of film"

"i think everyone should see the film - it's evocative, emotional, beautifully shot. i imagine most everyone will like it, especially older people who will have a nostalgic reaction to the 50s americana imagery. but it seemed to be trying too hard to say too little in my opinion."

i guess i just appreciate subtlety in film. this film is not at all subtle. it's kind of like 'questioning the meaning of life for dummies'.

i think the scope of the film was commendable in concept, but in execution it is clumsy and even banal. i heard one critic say this: "it's like watching the most beautiful person you've ever seen say the most boring thing you've ever heard", and i agree.

a vaguely comparable meditative film would be something like tarkovsky's 'stalker', which is incidentally my favorite film. and as far as 'film as meditation' or 'film as prayer' goes, tarkovsky just did it better IMO.

+1. I hated it because when I finally got depressed because a bad thing happened to my favourite character, Underworld started to play in the background.

How am I supposed to feel miserable listening to "King of Snake"!? :p

But really, I didn't like it.

Actually, I think most here haven't seen it. Or at least, no one has said they've seen it other than you and LeopoldStotch.

what you mean to say is "this movie is going to TRY VERY HARD to have a 'deep meaning' with some 'heavy reflection' that will 'go over peoples heads' but overall it won't be worth the tax you pay on your ticket"
