ageHa (and other Japanese nightlife)

Ok, so there isn't a Japan regional forum and most of the TAs who live in Japan or visit often hang out in the COR, so I thought this would be a good place to post this.

I'm going to Japan for a friend's wedding next month. The wedding is in Kochi, but our group is going to spend some time in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka while we're there. I haven't been to Japan in 10 years, and I was a teenager then, so I know nothing of the nightlife.

My biggest question is about tickets for ageHa. Paul Van Dyk is playing the night we were planning on going (lucked out on that one), and we want to be sure we can get in. Is it possible to buy presales online with USD? If not, do they have a lot of tickets at the door or would we be screwed if we just showed up on the day of? The club's website is a bit difficult to find info on.

Any additional advice about nightlife in Japan is welcome. Particularly good lounges or bars in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Nice places to grab a drink, hang out, etc. Club recommendations would be great, too, but I have a feeling ageHa will end up being our only big club night since we're on a busy schedule.

I've heard Yellow (Tokyo) and Triangle (Osaka) are both awesome.
Of course, there's also the infamous Womb in Tokyo.

FOR PRE-TICKETS, YOU WILL NEED TO BE ABLE TO READ JAPANESE!!!

Keep checking Ageha's site. They'll release information; the date on the calendar will become clickable when ticket info is available. It's in Japanese only, and you'll need to read Japanese at

Easiest way is to go to Lawson (convinience store) to buy a pre-sale ticket from the 'Loppi Machine' print it out, and take it to the counter and pay. You'll need to enter your mobile number (Japanese) and your name in Japanese characters.

Or you can wait 'til the night and get one at the door. Get there early (22:30) or so. You'll need to go to Shin-Kiba staiton (Yurakacho line, last stop). It's a short walk from there. There's a 7-11 almost opposite Ageha where poeple stock up on booze, but you can't take any in. ID is an absolute MUST, and the security are super-strict. Do not mess!

Mado-Lounge in Roppongi Hills could be a good bet for pre-drinks. Great night views, but super-expensive to get into. Or Park Hyatt (Lost In Translation hotel) (nearest subway Tocho-mae)
Otherwise, random bars in Shibuya/Shinjuku are a good bet.

Leave you stuff in lockers at the staiton (suica?passmo cards or 100 yen coins) or go to Ageha and use the ones outside (100 yen coins only).

PvD sucks in Tokyo though. Seen him twice, once at Unit and once at Ageha. Utterly useless. :( Yoda (friend of mine ;) )is on before though, so should be a good night. Head to the pool area first after you get in, and then head in to the main room at about 02:45...

Either way, Ageha will be the best club you ever go to. The biggest club in Asia (though not big enough for Tiesto apparently) and 'the' best sound/lighting system you will ever hear/see.

If you were going to Kobe I'd have a number of interesting bars to recommend.

Thanks, guys!

@Ocean_Drive: I don't have a Japanese mobile number, so I guess I can't use the machine at Lawson. I've read that there is a free shuttle bus to the club from Shibuya. Is that true?

To be honest, you could probably eneter in any number, just start it with 080 and put the ' - ' in as illustrated.
There is a shuttle bus. Never taken it, but I always prefer going by train anyway.

If you want to enter a number and make sure you're not going to bother anyone, here's mine.

It's a phone number from Nagoya... and I'm in Brazil now :D

I just called that number for about a minute while repeatedly saying "c'mon mate, pick up the phone, c'mon Lira, pick up the phone"...and you didn't.

:stongue:

I meant to post it here a couple of days before my return (hence the leetness), but my fiancée needed the phone, and I'm not sure she'd appreciate random calls in a language she doesn't really feel comfortable with :p

Ok, I'm a week away from the trip!

PVD canceled, so now it's Solarstone at ageHa on the 14th. This actually makes me happy, cause I prefer his style of music over PVD's. Plus it's probably less expensive than PVD would have been.

A couple more questions about ageHa for those who have been:

1. What time does the headliner normally go on?
2. How late does the club stay open?
3. How much are drinks?
4. Is it possible to reserve a table in the main room? If so, how much? The website is kind of confusing to me on this.

And some more questions about Tokyo. We're planning on checking out Shibuya/Harajuku on Sunday, so:

1. Any good vinyl shops to check out with rare tracks that are hard to find outside Japan?
2. Best stores for funky Japanese t-shirts and such?

Thanks again, guys! I can't wait!
