Migrashun is proud to present its Two Year Anniversary Event!
In two short years Migrashun has managed to create quite a stir in the windy city. Having booked artists such as: James Holden, DJ Koze, Lucy, Luke Hess, Jin Choi, Pfirter, Reference, Mathew Leutwyler, John Roberts, Fairmont, and many more no easy task in such a short time. In addition, the widely successful SEED podcast mixes, artist management, and promotional support are definitely reasons to celebrate. On May 13th, 2011 we will see the team of green take over the Lair at Vision for the third time.
To mark this special occasion Migrashun has put together an incredible lineup of international and local talent. Pawel (Berlin), co-founder of Dial records, will be making his Chicago debut with his critically acclaimed live performance. Co-headlining will be Chicago’s own Kate Simko. Having released on labels such as Hello? Repeat, Spectral Sound, and Ghostly this home bred talent has been making waves with appearances at renowned venues such as: Watergate, Weekend, Fabric, Bar Americas, Stereo, Rex Club and many more. Also performing will be Migrashun’s founder and executive A&R Mathias Matthew, Brandon Burke playing under his Funk Shui moniker, and Jason Warth of Curbed Records!
As with all Migrashun events, expect top-notch sound and lighting along with artwork provided by rising abstract artist Jason Noah. The event will be taking place in the private basement room of Vision Nightclub called “The Lair.” When you go to the vision door you will let them know that you are there for the Migrashun event and you will be directed to a private entrance to the event. Discounted presale tickets will be available on residentadvisor.net until the day of the event. This show will reach capacity so pre-sale tickets are highly recommended.
Being the brainchild of Mathias Matthew, Migrashun has been a seed that throughout time has been cultivated, genetically altered, and engineered with years of experience guiding the way. It was created to inject life, inspire, and give millions of tech house, minimal, deep house and techno fans an outlet to see and hear performers from the lighter side of the fence. || Pawel ||
- Berlin
- Dial Records, Orphanear
Born in Poland in 1978, Pawel Kominek grew up in Frankfurt/Main, Germany. In 1997, he released his debut 12” single “biocenter” on Poets Club Records ran by Jan Peter Schwalm, a long-time producing partner of Brian Eno. A year later, the first 12”s under the name Turner were released on the label Ladomat Records in Hamburg and received instant success among the electronic music scene worldwide.
In 2001, he started the new label dial-rec. with his friends Peter “Lawrence” Kersten and David “Carsten Jost” Lieske. Several productions for film-soundtracks and remixes for various artists such as Ellen Alien, Miss Kitten, Depeche Mode, A-ha etc. completed his output in the past years. As an addition to Dial Rec., in 2007 Paul started his own label Orphanear. After two praised 12" on NY based Label Ransom Note and on Dial Records, we finally got Pawel´s selftitled debut album! Pawel´s live performances are famous for combining the energetic minimal house & techno backings with his fabulous vocal skills, known from his Turner releases.

|| Kate Simko ||
- Chicago
- Hello? Repeat, Spectral Sound, Ghostly
In a sometimes-generic scene, where the emphasis can be on fitting into a mould, Kate Simko continues into 2011 as one of the most unique and imaginative artists making electronic music today. A woman of many talents, the Chicago native continues to be one of the standout dance music producers in the United States, earning the respect of her peers and catapulting her career to international success.
Kate’s forthcoming album ‘Lights Out,’ scheduled for May release on Hello? Repeat, and her accompanying A/V live tour, which meshes music and a highly anticipated HD video display, promise to once again push Kate firmly out from the crowd. Recorded in Buenos Aires in early 2009/early 2010, ‘Lights Out’ allowed Kate to explore her newer ideas and, importantly, expand beyond the structure of individual songs to construct a longer story. “I looked at the album as an art project – an installation of ten pieces that together form their own unique being.”
In a way ‘Lights Out’ brings Kate full circle, albeit with a twist. Her debut record was a full album - ‘Shapes of Summer’ (Traum, 2003). This collaboration between Kate and Andres Bucci was also produced in South America - Santiago to be precise – and completed whilst Kate was continuing her studies in composition. On her forthcoming debut solo album Kate goes out there with the experience of releases on venerated labels such as Spectral Sound and Ghostly International, as well as an extensive background in classical music that caught the attention of renowned minimalist composer Philip Glass, for whom she did a remix (Glasscuts, Orange Mountain Music). In 2008, Kate added “film composer” to her list of accomplishments, producing the soundtrack for the PBS feature film documentary, The Atom Smashers; the soundtrack was later released on Ghostly International.
Kate’s unique path into music making has led to a distinctive and innovative sound that has carved her niche in dance music’s avante garde. While she established her reputation as a performer with her innovative live sets, she has increasingly gained notoriety for her DJ mixes. When DJing, her creative track selection and ability to adjust to the crowd make her a rare performer who can bring both depth and fun to the party. Among the numerous clubs and festivals Kate has played, a few of the highlight sets include Berghain (Berlin), Fabric (London), the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, MUTEK (Montreal), Eleven (Tokyo), and D-Edge (Sao Paulo)

|| Mathias Matthew ||

Mathias Matthew has grown over the years to become one of the most technically skilled performers of this generation. Throughout the years he has gained experience working in production, promotion, and performance. Getting his start on the flyer team of Necto in Ann Arbor, Michigan paved the way for many things to come. Since then, we have seen Mathias perform at numerous venues in Detroit including: Bleu Room, The Works, Finite Gallery, DEMF 2004, State Theatre, Centre Street, and Oslo just to name a few. In addition to performing, Mathias also worked on numerous production projects including the likes of Departure (Works Monthly) and Brio. Working with Derek Fox, Brio produced the Drip events which brought a new unique spin to Detroit’s electronic community. Brio used blank canvas venues to emphasize the performers while complimenting the venue with minimal eccentric visuals.
After relocating to Chicago in the fall of 2008, Mathias has played at venues such as Vision, Tini Martini, Victor Hotel, Wax, Smart Bar and other hotspots. He has shared the decks with artists such as James Holden, Jake Fairley, Frankie Bones, John Digweed, Pfirter, Fairmont, DJ Three, John Acquaviva, Benny Benassi, Lucy, Luke Hess, Ryan Elliot, Paul Oakenfold, Kate Simko just to name a few. In 2008 and 2009 he worked as the Marketing Director of Volatl tm which has helped him gain knowledge and experience of the industry in all its facets. Moving into 2009 we now see Mathias moving forward with his project labeled “Migrashun”. Over the past two years Migrashun has became a force in the EDM scene in Chicago and shows no signs of slowing down. Mathias has now moved into incorporating Ableton and midi controllers into his live performances, playing what some might label a hybrid set of edits, tracks and samples in rapid rotation.

|| Funk Shui ||

For 12 years now Funk Shui (Brandon Burke) has been bringing his blend of house and techno to discerning dance floors by taking you on a trip through the valleys of deep house into the peaks of techno and beyond. Being from Chicago the 4/4 and heavy bass runs deep through his blood, this conveys through his productions, dj sets and by the way he dances away with you from behind the booth.
2010 was a breakout year for Funk Shui by playing alongside some of the industry's best talent such as Steve Bug, Dubfire, Booka Shade, Radio Slave, Bruno Pronsato, and more in Chicago's top venues. And 2011 shows no signs of slowing with the signing to Detroit label Detek, a constant production schedule both solo & as Wavelength (w. Kyle Szmurlo), his production company Alloude hosts the now infamous Floating Frequencies boat parties (Movement) and will be celebrating the rebirth of his underground Cycles events showcasing the nation's rising talent. He is looking forward to his part in helping progress the next generation of talent to rise from "the home of house".

|| Jason Warth ||

With a focus on developing the visual elements that go along with dance music, Jason has spent the last several years serving the Chicago dance music scene through his unique approach to graphic design and photography. His work—which now permeates Chicago's electronic dance music community—has been one of many factors that has recently helped that city regain its deserved reputation as an undeniable force within dance music.
His unique approach in directing the design for Vision Nightclub and VOLATL Events turned many heads—within Chicago and beyond—and eventually lead to his role as design director for 3 record labels: Wahi's "Curbed Recordings" (Chicago); Holosound's "Holobound Theory" (NYC); and the upcoming label from Bristol's Jody Wisternoff (of Way Out West).
2009 marked the year that his commitment to this music became so great that it simply became impossible to continue to avoid applying his creative talents to the music itself. Thus, the fall of 2009 saw the official beginning of this branch of the tree—with his debut in Vision's main room, alongside Wahi (Curbed Recordings) and Seneca (Audiologic), as well as the release of his first promotional mix.
Musically, Jason draws upon an assortment of influences—from the sexier deep-house sounds of Dana Bergquist, Luke Fair and Jody Wisternoff; to the grittier, tech-inspired sounds found in Chicago's new underground; to the classical-music upbringing that first shaped his passion for music.

RA NEWS: Migrashun celebrates two years of parties
Pawel and Kate Simko top the bill for the Chicago promoter's anniversary at Vision.
http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=13904
To celebrate their second anniversary, Migrashun will host the Chicago debut of Berlin-based producer Pawel in Vision's basement room on Friday May 13th.
Since its inception in 2009, Migrashun has booked the likes of DJ Koze, James Holden and Lucy for parties around Chicago. Earlier this year, the crew hosted Dial Records artist John Roberts, and for the two-year bash they've enlisted Pawel, one of the founders of that German house imprint, to perform live. Formerly known for his prolific Turner alias, Pawel has been an occasional contributor on Dial for a decade leading up to last year's self-titled album, and he has garnered praise for a sultry live set supplemented by his own vocals.
Sharing the night's headlining honors is Chicago's own Kate Simko, whose debut full-length album is set to drop next month on Hello? Repeat. She'll showcase her deep, sexy style with a set on the decks, with support coming from Migrashun's own Mathias Matthew along with fellow locals Funk Shui and Jason Warth, who's also the mind behind the event's flyer art. The party is happening in the The Lair, the basement room of Vision mega-club. It's a private event, so attendees will have to tell the Vision security where they're going in order to be led downstairs. Discounted pre-sale tickets are available right here on RA. |
