Sin City turns Spin City
The world's top DJs hit the nightclubs (and pools) of Las Vegas this summer

THE Electric Daisy Carnival dance music festival, which attracted more than 180,000 people in Los Angeles last year, comes to Las Vegas June 24-25. But this extravaganza, loaded in 2010 with talent like Deadmau5, Basement Jaxx, Moby and will.i.am, is only two days of what will be a sweltering Vegas summer. The world’s hottest DJs and electronic-music artists will hold court in Sin City practically every single day.
"Vegas has become the nightlife capital of the world," says Noah Tepperberg, co-owner of the Marquee Nightclub and Dayclub at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, which has booked British dance-music pioneer Fatboy Slim for Memorial Day weekend, Fourth of July weekend and Labor Day weekend. "On any given night, you’ve got thousands of people filling the clubs, even on weeknights. The DJs are producers, they’re making hits, they’re on MTV. They like being in Vegas, where they’re able to build their American fan base."

French house sensation David Guetta, who’s collaborated with the Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna and Flo Rida on smash hits and is perhaps the highest-profile name on the international DJ circuit, is curating the weekly F*** Me I’m Famous party poolside at MGM Grand’s Wet Republic, which starts on Sunday, April 10. And while he won’t be there every week, he and wife/party collaborator Cathy should be bouncing in and out of Vegas frequently.
A big-deal, globetrotting DJ putting together a weekly bash isn’t a new Vegas concept — British trance king Paul Oakenfold’s Saturday Perfecto party at the Palms’ Rain nightclub has been going strong since 2008. But what is new is the sheer number of world-class electronic-music artists showing up in Vegas every week. These are big names who routinely sell out thousands of tickets at venues all over the world. So why wouldn’t Vegas nightclubs that cost tens of millions to build shell out hundreds of thousands to secure talent for the summer’s biggest party weekends?
"The level of activity for electronic music in Vegas is unprecedented," says Jonathan Shecter, director of programming at venues including Encore Beach Club and the adjacent Surrender nightclub. "It’s a frenzy, the most active market in the whole world. The amount of money being spent here, the deals being made, it’s really red hot."
Consider Memorial Day Weekend alone: XS, the spectacular nightclub at Steve Wynn’s Encore resort that only recently started booking expensive touring DJs on a regular basis, will feature talent including Canadian masked man Deadmau5, Dutch giant Afrojack and Kanye West crew member A-Trak.
Afrojack (who recently won a Grammy alongside Guetta for remixing Madonna’s "Revolver") and Deadmau5 will also be at Encore Beach Club that weekend, as will Kaskade. And Steve Aoki will throw down at Surrender along with Scottish spinner Calvin Harris.
Aoki and Afrojack are both resident DJs for the clubs at the Encore resort, and the pair even recorded a song with Omarion in a temporary studio inside the store of Encore Beach Club. Encore is creating permanent studio space for them now. And if you visit the Wynn Las Vegas poker room after Aoki’s sets, don’t be surprised to see the DJ playing cards with local poker pros and other pals.
Over at Marquee, the lineup beyond Fatboy Slim for the new club’s first Memorial Day weekend will feature Dutch trance legend Armin van Buuren. Marquee and its sister clubs Tao/Tao Beach (at the Venetian) and Lavo (at the Palazzo) are known for their noteworthy DJ residencies — Erick Morillo (who is at Tao on Memorial Day weekend and often ends his sets after 8 a.m.), DJ Vice (at Lavo on Memorial Day weekend) and Kaskade are among the regulars.
The Palms’ Memorial Day weekend Love Festival will counter with heavyweights including Germany’s Paul van Dyk and, of course, resident Oakenfold. But the most notable residency in town might be at the Hard Rock’s oft-overlooked Joint, where Dutch godfather Tiesto will be on May 7, Memorial Day weekend, Fourth of July weekend and Labor Day weekend.
Dance dance revolution, indeed.
TRIPLE PLAY
Three more dance parties to kick off your summer

Nearly 90,000 people showed up last year. This year could be even bigger with headliners including Felix da Housecat and Fatboy Slim.

2) Mutek
Montreal, June 1-5
The eclectic, indie-minded lineup of this five-day festival includes Brazil’s Amon Tobin and England’s Four Tet.

This three-day festival will bring in a mix of bands and DJs to satisfy both alt-rock and dance-music fiends. The lineup geared toward the latter includes Underworld and Aphex Twin.

These guys clearly haven't been to Toronto. Where every weekend you can see some of the best global talent, in addition to the party going until 5 or 6 if you want it too.
That's 5-6 p.m. on Sunday.
Saw Dubfire a few weeks back and he wanted to keep playing so he went to an afterhours down the street and played back to back with Carlo Lio until noon. Same with Lawler, Gary Beck, Victor, etc... |
