It was so close to home for me...
One of my favorite venues in the city. Will miss it in the summer for sure.
They made a mean Sangria. |

If it's any concilaton, the one on Wall St was pretty wack. I mean I appreciate that they tried and I did make it out a few times there and had a decent time but it wasn't a good space.
But I just moved out of Wall St. to only a few blocks from the original WTB and we were all so pumped to spend the summer there, so god damn pissed now |

All the 40-50-something year olds making our laws and governing these zoning restrictions are all part of the Woodstock, Studio 54, sex drugs & rock n' roll eras. They were all part of a wilder time than we live in now. It's so sad that a real estate developer can easily pay off our governing officials and just like that, they can shut down huge tracts of entertainment areas that stimulate millions of dollars per year in the city.
Half of these luxury condos are lucky if they sell more than 50% of their units. They've priced us "regular people" out of the neighborhoods, and half their buildings are empty. After a year, the "for lease" signs go up, yeah, nice development strategy.. |

yeah it is sad how the business nowadays is driven by the quickest way to make money. fast profit that's all everyone cares
i finished for mechanical engineer and when i see how they design some of the mechanical systems now. instead of picking the most efficient one to work best for the costumer who will eventually buy the building, they build the best initial cost one. meaning as initial coast its cheaper but years later it will be the most expensive for the costumer. they don't care . |

Hopefully more events at WTB Governors Island. Not the same, but it sounds like an option. |

definitely not good news, one of my fav summer spots. the south st seaport venue isn't quite the same, maybe cause it's smaller and the crowd seems to consist mostly of curious tourists instead of househeads, or maybe cause it's right next to hordes of tourists walking around.
awesome venue, will be missed |

Dear Friends and Neighbors
Unfortunately, Water Taxi Beach must bid farewell to Long Island City!
Since we opened in 2005, over 240,000 people have visited Water Taxi Beach in Long Island City (WTB/LIC). This unique urban oasis of sun and fun provided a much-needed outdoor recreation space for the Long Island City community, helped to burnish the image of this redeveloping neighborhood and showcased the potential of our city's waterfront.
WTB/LIC has hosted volleyball leagues; birthday parties; weddings; bat mitzvah's; local school graduation parties, high school and military reunions; photo shots; social, civic and political fundraising events; DJ concerts; and even an episode of Top Chef.
WTB/LIC is an award-winning recreation space with a local, national and international reputation as a great place to kick back and relax while looking out at the most spectacular skyline in the world._WTB/LIC was voted "Best Place to Pretend you're in Miami" by New York Magazine; described as "Imagination on the Waterfront" in a NY Times editorial.
The Guardian, in the UK, rated WTB/LIC as one of the "Ten Best Party Beaches in the World" and international press from Italy, Germany Australia, Japan, Spain, Argentina, Sweden and Brazil, among others, have touted Water Taxi Beach / Long Island City as an important place to visit when you're in New York.
Last fall, the New York City Economic Development Corporation, which is coordinating the construction of new Hunters Point South development, informed us that they needed to build combined storm water sewer outfalls as part of the new Hunters Point South development. They told us they needed WTB/LIC to construct these outfalls and we that we would have to vacate the current location.
WTB/LIC serves a real need for open space and recreation in the Long Island City and Sunnyside communities and has 42 seasonal employees (the manager and quite a few staff are Long Island City residents)._Many local merchants and vendors serve the Beach and visitors to WTB/LIC would increase ridership on the new East River Ferry Service. In addition, NYC EDC has been a very supportive landlord.
So we asked NYC EDC for permission to move this unique urban experiment to a vacant lot further away from the construction, just to the south of the existing parking lot._We developed a new design, expanding the Beach, adding a nine-hole miniature golf course and a better volleyball court configuration. The site has great views and a lot of open space.
Unfortunately, NYC EDC informed us last week that they couldn't accommodate our relocation request, so we will not be able to open for the 2011 season.
However, the new plan for the Hunters Point South waterfront includes a Beach so it appears that we had a good idea, which was widely embraced._We hope to have an opportunity to return to a Beach in Long Island City once waterfront construction is complete.
Borough President Helen Marshall has often said that WTB/LIC is a Queens' cultural institution and we would like to thank her and all of the business, civic and political leaders who have supported WTB/LIC. Most of all, we would like to thank everyone who visited Water Taxi Beach / Long Island City and made it such a special place.
We have enjoyed the opportunity to do something meaningful for the community, the waterfront and our City. We hope that you will visit us at watertaxibeach.com and share your memories and photos of WTB/LIC on our Facebook page or sign up for our Newsletter to stay in touch.
We hope that you all have a great summer and can join us at one of our other waterfront oasis at South Street Seaport or on Governors Island.
Best Wishes
Tom Fox

Save Our Beach!_
_Please help us save our beach! Long Island City's Water Taxi Beach has served the neighborhood, the city, and beyond for 6 years now. It brought in revenue and boosted the economy locally here in LIC, as well as_within the whole of New York City from visitors far and wide. It employed 47 workers,_enlisted over a dozen vendors w/_many employees. The city has closed it down to accommodate the new Hunters Point South development,_which is understandable. So WTB asked for permission to move this unique urban experiment to a vacant lot further away from the construction, just to the south of the existing parking lot. They_developed a new design, expanding the Beach, adding a nine-hole miniature golf course and a better volleyball court configuration. The site has great views and a lot of open space. But NYC EDC has shot down the proposal with little consideration.
As a resident and parent here in LIC, I am heartbroken at this sudden news - i always assumed there would be a WTB -_where families enjoy the view, children play in the sand while their parents grab a beer, play volleyball, listen to music, and eat a hot dog._ Few businesses in the neighborhood, or the city for that matter, open their doors for the public just to relax and enjoy themselves.
We as LIC residents ask that the Mayor reconsider the proposal on the table and accomodate the relocation of Water Taxi Beach to the currently unoccupied piece of land under conditions_agreeable to all parties.
So please join our cause and take a minute to sign this petition asap._

We appreciate it
Is this for real? No more fun parties on the beach? |
