I saw this thread sinking down but Robby Rox definitely doesn't pass up kick drum threads.
Remember peoples opinions vary wildy so never take anything anyone says too personally.
I think the kick is avg, but also weak. It has a nice click, not to overdone, has got a bit of density to it but overall it lacks a ton of presence.
One way very basic way I judge kicks is how they sound at a low volume. A kick should still sound like it has energy and power at a low volume. It should also create pressure and move cones, create vibrations, slam hard through a track.
Your kick lacks body and low end. Its also not as organic/dynamic as I prefer mine to be. And I don't think it would stand the test of a hard hitting bassline in a completed mix, its just not present enough and thats not something you can fix by raising your faders.
I've been doing quite a lot of kicks lately and one thing they all have in common is at low volumes they still sound energetic and loud. They will first pierce through the mix with w/e transient I layer over them, and miliseconds after the click there is an unforgiving low end that just smashes down like a sledgehammer. This kick just sounds weak really. Could you make it work? Sure. Could you make a hundred other kicks work better? Absolutely.
If you want me to show you my idea of a good kick feel free to ask and I'll post it. But this one sounds too synthetic, too thin, lacks dynamic, and also lacks presence. If you played this in a full mix I wouldn't be suprised if you could barely hear the click and no low end at all. Its just not a strong kick is my point. |

no no no no, not a strong kick for the horse power!
low end is weak boomy and high end is just a 909 closed hat right?
I don't know how to produce a good kick from the scratch, and actually I think it's not a good idea... Why? Because I see that many kick producers use outboard gear to produce they kicks and they really sound liquid analog to my ears... eg.: Wave Alchemy, they use nice outboard gear.
These days, the best method to reach the desired punch, fitting perfect in a mix, is LAYERING. |

though creating your own kicks is fulfilling (in the sense of "it's as much about the journey as about the destination)I don't think that one can do a better or different job than all the millions of kicks that are already out there.
If i really want to, I often just grab metrum and layer/load/tweak some samples and put a sinewave underneath. (for the people who don't know, metrum is both a sampler and drumsynthesizer)and put that through my Distressors.
But most of the time i "settle" with just one of the expansion pack kicks. |

I started bothering with kick drums just because of Quivver and Pryda. They have really sick kick drum that are different than anything I've heard. The question has been asked on several forums and there's never a good answer on how to make really top notch .
I have a hearty collection of kick drums and none of them come close to Pryda.(still haven't looked through drum tools)
So this kick was just kind of an experimentation to see if I could get the low end right.
If you want to post a kick drum you like go ahead. |
