Question about smart busing habits... (pg. 2)

I read somwhere that when putting your kick and bass on the same buss to be compressed together both kick and bass must be in mono....why is this? I tried it with my bass being stereo and it sounds fine.
I normally have the kick and the bass bussed and compressed together. However, i usually have the kick bussed with other tracks like perc or generally what ever i want sidechained and peak controlled.
Actually another question i have been wondering about is: before i stared to compress the kick/bass together the sound of my high pass filter's Q factor(on kick) was more audible, and now that i have them compressed togther when i HP filter the kick the HP filter sounds different in terms of Q factor....why is this?

1. Because most club-systems are still in mono, I think. So if you're aiming for your track to be playable in clubs, you should check how your track sounds in mono from time to time.
2. Because the compressor compresses the loudest parts of your kick (and these, depending on your Q, are the frequencies near where you hi-pass the kick) to more match the quieter parts of your kick. Then you gain your kick to match the original volume before compression, now with the quieter parts more audible and the loudest parts "less" audible.
I hope that makes sense. |

OH MY ING GOD
That's it. I swore the next time I saw this ing outdated urban myth posted on I was going to freak out so this it is:
MOST MOTHERING CLUBS ARE NOT MONO. REPEAT: CLUBS ARE NOT ING MONO!
Nearly all clubs these days are at least dual mono, if not stereo.
I swear to god I want a sticky that just says "clubs are not mono". I just can't understand why this myth perpetuates endlessly.
No the reason kick and bass are often in mono is that lower frequencies like kick and sub bass are unidirectional, therefore panning them essentially does nothing apart from up your stereo image and seeing as other higher frequencies are directional, you should pan them to give the separation from other frequencies in the stereo field.
Essentially it lets you create a stereo image by doing this. |

| Well make a ing thread that says most club-systems aren't mono. That's what ing 90 % of threads that this has been discussed about told me, so don't blame me. |

Are you ing joking. In just about every thread of the last few years I have posted the same ing thing.
Here you go:
http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...588683-p-2.html
Again in this thread at the beginning the old chesnut comes up again and by the end of the thread the BS resolved:
http://www2.tranceaddict.com/forums...d=&pagenumber=1
And again....
http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...12&pagenumber=2
I don't know what else I can do. I'm not blaming you as such, I just don't know why it keeps getting posted as truth when it hasn't been accurate for probably 15 years and even then it was a bit of a misnoma. |

In fairness, the TA search function leaves a lot to be desired.
The best way to find info is just to google "tranceaddict" and then the subject matter. |

| Well thank you for clearing that up. I actually thought that was the sole reason for the sub to be mono. I hope my "advice" on compression wasn't that flawed. I should maybe stick to reading advice. |

:haha: When scrolling down reading the posts I wondered when I'd see something like this from you in reply to the mono thing.
If that was the case why would club mixers have panning fx on them?? Would be pointless really. |

im starting to think i was completely wrong about the whole sticky issue. after all Rann seems to be more right, we need more stickies like for example the mono thing. The whole first page should be stickied with the most common questions.
01. clubs arent mono. Its not. Seriosly.
02. get a soundcard, a decent one. soundblaster isnt one of them.
03. search. search again. then search on google and youtube.
04. get monitors and forget about sub, PLZ FORGET ABOUT THE SUB!
05. analog compression is a must, otherwise your track wont shine.
06. armin is the best, how do i sound like him.
07. trance is alive cause armin is number one (or two).
08a. dubstep (what is that werd 7/5 signature?) aka I cant count to three four times during a bar.
08b. dubstep (what is that werd noise sound?). Efex.
09. if you have CPU issues with small projects, go to point 2.
10. Should I get HS80 in a 4m2 room? lol.
11. Read the stickies (this is one of them btw).
12. Learn to bounce/freeze tracks in big projects.
13. 16 zetaz a must for a baseline? CPU issue. Go to point 2, 9, 12, 16.
14. teh random thread (discuss )
15. post your studio pics
16. the baseline thread (fight against ompa ompa).
17. room threatment
18. mastering
19. analog
20. sidechain
21. latency, bitrate, samplerate, soundcards, CPU (again? wtf).
22. remix comps.
23. WIP (work in progress)
24. what else is there?
25. /rant
26a. hating/trolling

DJ Rann said most mothering clubs are not mono.
But what he didn't say is that most nonmothering clubs are still mono.
So if I mix in mono, then ma bazzlines will sound just like tiestoz right?
I don't really care what mono/stereo does as long as my basslines are worthy of the infamous jesus christ pose. |
