Just finished the master for this! If you could give me your comments on the track itself or its mastering job that would be awesome!
The dynamic range of the track ended up being 8.1 so I think I did a good job of having it be loud still with not too crushed of transients, but let me know what you guys think!
Comments on this thread or soundcloud are both very much welcome. If you like it please follow me on SoundCloud and let me know!
Thanks guys! :D

Kinda dull. The composition is kind of lacking.

What's a dynamic range of 8.1? The average RMS level is -13.2 dB, which gives me more of an idea.

But there's nothing wrong with the master and it sounds fine. Nice job choosing dynamics over volume.

I agree that the composition is a little dull but I think the mastering is excellent. it sounds great but it could use more interesting elements.

nice tune mate, and the master seems fine. i think i always tend to boost the master to much, may try and ease back a little.

this tune is defo up to par with material that is getting sold on the download sites

cool tune but yeah that bell like synth isn't carrying the track along like a better synth might.

edit: I thought since I didn't mention anything about mixdown/mastering you would have thought I inherently assessed those were both good which I do :D the rhythm and envelope on it are cool on that synth, but it needs some more harmonics perhaps? maybe some other elements? it kinda of sounds like one part to a whole patch. fill out the chords and harmonics, and expand on the instrumentation. your only other thing that is playing chords is that lead and the 16th note stabby guy. ? there is no real climax, i feel.

First off, thank you to all the reviews thus far. Glad I did well on the mastering job according to you guys! :D

The bell-like synth is purely an analog pulse wave, with your typical 50/50 PWM. Has quite a bit of noise floor in the sample (which I liked), with of course filter envelopes, pitch envelopes, and filter automation. The sound is mono itself, and to brighten it up I added some lengthy reverb, and an auto-pan so it moves back and forth between the speakers. Considering its a mono synth, thats probably more or less where the "emptiness" of the sound comes from (along with it being a pulse/square).

This style is actually a little out of what I normally do, and didn't really know where to go with it (hence why it kinda goes nowhere). It still sits as a good filler track as is, though, and the big "clap clap" every once in awhile still gets the crowd involved so doesn't bore them too much, and the bouncey bassline helps in a live situation. Not trying to make excuses, just my thought process whilst writing the track.

Looking forward to posting more new tracks here in the future for comment. Thanks a lot for what you guys have shared with me thus far! :D

Dynamic Range = DR - it describes the ratio of the amplitude of the loudest possible undistorted sine wave to the rms noise amplitude.
In other words - Its a ratio of what the loudest possible undistorted sound is, versus where the RMS sits. I like to use this instead of RMS, as a horrible mixdown can still mean distorting limiters, with really quiet parts that still bring the RMS down a notch.

2dit: To elaborate more, when you're comparing RMS you're comparing it against maximum output. So, this track is sitting at -13db (ish) RMS, with a max output of 0. This will give you an overall idea of how loud it is, but even then, max output usually doesn't mean much. It would make more sense to compare -13db RMS to 0db RMS. But comparing a track to a 0db RMS sample (like a clipped & squashed white noise sample) is hard to imagine because its SO LOUD. However, the loudest possible non-distorting sine wave is easier for me to imagine, and gives me a better idea of loudness. Thus is why I use a DR meter instead of just going off RMS.
