it takes up MUCH more memory

Winamp 2 was built with low end pentium machines, with less than 16/32 Megs of ram in mind, the prog. is a quite a few years old... Of course the new generation (v3) is going to be asking for more resources... maybe it has something to do with the new features :haha:  , besides PC's have come a long way. Winamp 3 may be more demanding to your PC, but I doubt today's 1gHZ+ machines will have a lot of difficulties running winamp...

there are few skins for it (1) and they have bugs beacuse skins are now more complex (2)

(1) DUH!!!! :toothless It's just out! have some patience will ya!!!! jeeez... relax, more skins will come in time.

(2)Because the skinning proces is a lot (well if you don't know XML...) more difficult, AND time-costly in WA3 than it was in WA2, only the top skinners will continue skinning for winamp, so I doubt you will see a lot of buggy/low quality skins. You will see a lot LESS amature skins (the crappy ones made with skinning tools AKA skinmaker.exe :D ), so the average quality of skins will more likely INCREASE, so what are you complaining about?

What you're talking about is called the 'crossfader'-feature. I am not aware of any bugs considering it, but that could be just me, if you say so, I believe you :) However, IT IS A FEATURE! if you don't like it, you can turn it OFF! :haha:

But there is also one thing, this isn't a true final fi nal, the only reason they realsed it is beacuse AOL set a date for winamp 3 to be done and it wasn't really done, th ey released a so called final (the one thats out now) while they're still fixing up on things

give the Nullsoft staff a break plz... I read a lot of critiscism, but there's one thing missing in this discussion... the fact that winamp IS FREE OF CHARGE!!! AND it doesn't include any Ads whatsoever... plz stop complaining about free stuff :D ok? :p ;)

May be true, but if it wasn't for AOL's investments, Nullsoft would have been bankrupt and long gone... plz don't forget to mention that while you're at it....

thanks for listening ;P

P.S: no flamage intended

I' sticking with 2.x until 2.99 is out!!! Even then, 2.x will STILL be be primary audio player. For video, PowerDVD and WMP is all I need. Plus, I'm getting a DVD player that can play DVD, CD-DA (Audio CD), VCD, SVCD, and MP3-CD on either pressed CDs, CD-Rs, OR CD-RWs soon. I'll just use that for all my movies that are on CDs/DVDs. I hope a DivX;) home player comes out! I know that a player is out for X-Box but, does it make X-Box play VCD/SVCD/MP3-CD on CD/CD-R/CD-RWs???

So what if it takes up more memory...check out THIS skin! I got tired of all the old looking ones and I think the memory/speed issue is definitely worth it for the new look. I've been using it all day and I haven't found any bugs.

Who cares about the skins anyway?
I don't look at WinAmp - it's always on the background...

You guys haven't even come CLOSE to talking about the worst part about winamp 3. it is full of ads for AOL, and tracks what you are doing! it is spyware!

DON'T DOWNLOAD IT, it sucks

(2.8 has a bit of ads as well, 2.74 is the last clean version)

here, read this, from the winamp forums:

Winamp was created by nullsoft, a group of coders who wanted a simple reliable mp3 player. since it was such an excellent product, and was made freely available for download, Winamp soon became the most used mp3 player. Unfortunately, Nullsoft was acquired by AOL/Time Warner. Subsequently, they have been forced to introduce all sorts of undesirable features, such as advertisements, and spy ware. I recently upgraded to 2.8, and there was an option to install a bunch of AOL things. I said, NO do not install. nonetheless, after the install, i found AOL icons on my desktop, and my computer not working nearly as well as it had. I have since reverted back to version 2.74. It runs fine, with no problems at all. this is the version i have included on the CD.
Winamp 3 was released august 8th, 2002. It is marketed as being the greatest mp3 player ever. It claims to have no advertisements. Today, one day later, i was browsing the winamp forums, and i found a thread from users, with their outrage. here is a link to the thread: why winamp3 sucks Note that this link will not work forever, and will likely be taken down once aol finds it. But, I have copied the useful content from the page, and pasted it here, for your information:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Apparently ads for services provided by Nullsoft's parent company don't count. Get your crap off my computer screen and keep it off. If you can't make a program free, charge for it.

Uninstalling Winamp will NOT remove them, of course.

How to fix:

Start->Search->For Files or Folders...
Search for files or folders named: *AOL*.*
Delete anything that looks like an advertisement.

It adds more than clutter to your desktop. It also adds these entries to your registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\America Online\Aod\Icon
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\America Online\Aod\Explorer
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\America Online\Aod\Internet Explorer
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\America Online\Aod

Installation of Winamp 3 also added this to my registry. I really don't know what it is. ???

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\FullCircle\TalkBack\NullsoftWinampWin32488
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\FullCircle\TalkBack

Never mind. I found out what it is. It's an optional "feedback" program.

The Agent gathers information that Netscape can use to improve Communicator. The most important information that the Agent collects after a crash or bug is the state of the software and the state of your computer. The Agent may also collect information about the stability and usage of Netscape.
There are three basic types of events that can invoke the Agent:
Crash—Communicator suddenly hangs or quits
Trigger—A Netscape-defined event that occurs during a user action, such as using a specific feature or reaching a pre-determined count.

Assert—A Netscape-defined event that can occur without any specific user action.

The Agent sends your information back to Netscape, where it is combined with information from other users. This allows Netscape to get an overview of how their applications are being used, how well they are performing, and what problems their users might be having. This overview lets the developers focus their attention on the features and problems that have the greatest impact on you, the user.

Although most of the information collected by the Agent is low-level, technical, and impersonal, some users may consider portions of the gathered information private. For your privacy and protection:
The Agent encrypts all data before it sends it to Netscape The Agent uses a secure transmission that makes sure only the software development team will receive the information the Agent has gathered. See Is the information gathered by the Agent secure?
You may view all of the information collected by the Agent before you authorized it to be sent. See How do I view the information the Agent will send?

Netscape can configure the Agent to collect information that is specific to their application. Application-specific data can be essential when tracking down a problem. The information that Netscape can specify for collection can include application state information, event histories, timing data, execution, and user-customizable settings.

Any data that the Agent collects on the Netscape’s behalf will be displayed along with the standard data when you view information from the Agent Information window.

Ahhhh. Winamp 3. Now with spyware.

i couldnt agree any more on that!!!!

why care about how something looks, when its minimized to the systray or the taskbar 90% of the time its up running? heh
wurd

imo the default skin is the best =p

the easiest, without all these strange graphics here and there which makes it harder to understand where the friggin' buttons really are

g0g0 default:)

@ JohnSmith:

i installed wa3.0 and then uninstalled it.

i didnt get any aol dir
neither did i get any keys in my registry that you could associate with aol. none of the keys you posted were in my registry. (the only aol files i have on my comp, are those who are following with icq2000b)

about that agent that collects info, you have an option to either activate it or not when installing winamp.

now i know that not everyone got the same setup/using same os and everything as me, and not everyone are so careful with what they install (even when it is winamp) on their computer as me, so i wont try to claim that the things you say is wrong, but it sure sounds a bit weird... but its your opinion / your experience with this application, so all i can do is to respect that.. :)

as for me, i dont use wa3.0 , but that's because of other reasons, like i dont get my mircaddon to work with it (yet), and i havent found any other decent plugin/wac that does work fine with mirc, and at last, no good pitcher to pitch my mp3/cds

otherwise, i think its quite good.. not better than 2.80, but still good.

greetz!"!
Mail Man
I will hold off till they bring out 3.01 or whatever. 3 this now has to many bugs. i like the idea of see thu skins, that sounds cool.
El~ZaPo
I haven't seen any ads or aol icons. But will let you know if I do.
detective you
