Often thought of as cartoons for children or ultra-violent shows for adults, anime has gained a certain reputation in North America. The Canadian National Anime Expo offers a chance for anime fans and the curious to see the art, meet the artists and greet the voice actors.

What's the first thing you think of when you hear the word anime? Often thought of as cartoons for children or ultra-violent shows for adults, anime has gained a certain reputation in North America. The Canadian National Anime Expo offers a chance for anime fans and the curious to see the art, meet the artists and greet the voice actors.
Some of the Japanese guests include Tommy Ohtsuka, responsible for Saber Marionette, Orphen, and Slayers Special, which has been appearing in "Dragon Jr." magazine since 1999 and Kia Asamiya, a manga artist famous for his creation 'Dark Angel'. Asamiya also worked for George Lucas on the Star Wars Manga (see right)
.
North American guests include voice actor Kirby Morrow, who has acted in "X-Men: Evolution" as Scott Summers/Cyclops, "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: The Movie" and "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing" as Trowa Barton, "Escaflowne" as Van Farnel, and "Ranma 1/2"; Kyle Hebert, who is best known for his work on Dragonball Z as the character of Teenage Gohan and the Ox King and C.B. Cebulski, an associate editor to Marvel Mangaverse. While at Central Park Media, Cebulski was instrumental in bringing titles such as Record of Lodoss War, Slayers, Plastic Little, Geobreeders, Dark Angel, and Nadeisco to North American audiences.
Anime and manga (comics) are different from their counterparts in America. For the most part, cartoons and comic books in America are thought of as geared toward youngsters though that is changing as seen with Neil Gaiman's Sandman graphic novels. Cartoons and comics books in Japan are geared towards all ages. |

ROFL, what a rip-off. :haha: :haha: I mean, even if I was a Brent Spiner fan... "limited edition certificate"...lol... :stongue:
Let's put it in a perspective that I can relate to:
"The hot ticket is the Afternoon with DJ Tiesto. He won't be spinning, but for $109 (gold rate which includes priority seating) or $79 (silver rate which includes reserve seating), fans can get an authentic Tiesto autograph and limited edition lp of his hit Sparkles. It's also a chance to get the latest gossip on upcoming Tiesto productions. .. blah blah blah..."
So yeah, even with Tiesto and even with the record that would be a complete ripoff imo.

Anyway I would normally hit up these conventions but I'm strapped for cash now, must plan for Summer's End at the Guv as well as university. :( |

Actually there's a big chance I will be going to this convention. I will be there for the comic book portion of the convention. I used to collect comic books when I was little and I just been reintroduced to them almost 12 years later LOL. Comic books here in North America is no longer geared to kids anymore.
There was an article on the Toronto Star recently about the 80's nostalgia boom in comic books. Brands like Transformers, Thundercats, He Man etc..are being reintroduced in comic books and now the 20+ something adults who loved them when they were kids are picking up the new series in droves. Might be worth checking out.
If you got a chance to check out the new transformers comic books, check out the art...it's insane. |
