You pretty much have one club that books trance regularly. Circus. With that booty sound and acoustics (not a knock on LMD, they do the best they can and respect it). Good crowd (when not full of zombies). Can have very welcoming vibes. Avalon does it sparingly (though picking up more), and Insomniac is trying to do things at Henry Fonda, but it's not regularly. Other than that, most of the main acts that come through LA play at the Palladium (not a club) these days it seems or one of the many festival (not a club). SF has Taj, Spundae, ME, Torq, Ruby Skye (on its own), Skills, and more who throw 18+ and 21+ trance events in clubs at various CLUBS. While I might've not been able to get out as much as I like, I don't have to go to a club to know who the hell is playing and who is behind it and see how has changed.
Anyhow, that's my point. The trance scene in clubs in LA has sucked ass for 2-3 years now, in comparison to how it was before. 5-6 years ago when you had promoters throwing trance events regularly at Avalon, Vanguard, and Circus. People even threw events at the Hollywood & Highlands then, too. And you still had the festivals. Back then, DJs didn't hold out on the clubs then like they do now for the festivals.
Again, when you look at the whole picture and are honest with yourself, it sucks ass compared to what it can be or has been. That said, it is better than 99% of other cities out there. But for LA, it's suffering. You said it yourself, it's still "good." At one time, it was ing amazing. Club wise that is. Sorry that I have high standards for a city like LA.
I 100% agree. Yea we may be spoiled but 5 years ago it was much better, now clubs don't even try to out do each other here like in the past. If anything the festivals ruined the club scene. Armin had played a club in LA once in 4 years

I wouldn't blame the festivals. It's just that the big names became too big for clubs, even for 21+ events. Armin played Vanguard 2 years ago. Everyone was complaining about the long line. Same thing for Paul Van Dyk in '08 even on a Friday.

Yeah the trance scene I'm not too, too worried about. I'm really into progressive house and tech =] Full on trance like Markus Schulz or something would be fun and I would go to clubs and events like that, and even one of the guys I mentioned expressing support is a trance DJ, but it seems like there's just a lot of music anyway. So to explore a trance moniker, and a progressive house moniker, and if things go well start doing some underground techno tech-house stuff as well. Seems pretty promising. I told my friend who is based in SF that I was moving to LA and he said, "Just in time for the plastic to melt." I thought that was kind of funny but I doubt everyone is as superficial as he has himself experienced. And for me to say I don't want to be see and be seen is a lie, too. The music is just the most important thing though, I take it very seriously. =]

markus doesn't play "full on trance"

Markus is more trancey than ever. He used to be between a progressive and a prog-trance DJ at one time. It's a big reason he got known. People from both sides really dug him. Prog heads who would never dare step into a club with a trance DJ headlining would be going bonkers to him.
That said, he's harder now than he's ever been. But he's putting a lot of techno influence (not really tech-trance, though) into his stuff now and it seems to be paying off. His sound has changed, but he still has his own sound...which is great. You don't hear of DJs like Armin or Tiesto having their own sound (anymore). SvD had his own sound, maybe he still does. Ferry has had his own sound for years now. The difference with Markus is he's taken his own sound in a different direction that seems to be working for him. I think Markus really, really likes doing stuff under Dakota right now. Even that sound has changed a little (harder) since his first Dakota album.

It sucks so bad, the positive news today is that the unemployment rate dropped to 12%...wheeee! I have a friend in I.T. who has been out of work for 3 years and is getting desperate but there's nothing out there. I still have a job but the days are long and we are so understaffed. Kind of an irony that those who have jobs can't see the light of day and those who don't have endless time but no money...there seriously needs to be some rebalancing here! :wtf:

The recession is really to blame here. Every city across the board is hurting right now and "not as good" as they used to be.

You have a SoundCloud or someplace to hear your tracks? I run a label that releases this style of music.

It's easy to say that, but Ruby Skye and other events in SF have prob sold out or nearly sold out more recently that I can ever remember, to be honest.
And those massives in LA certainly don't seem to be affected by the recession. Explosive growth more than anything.
To the one asking about the job market, in my personal search I saw a HUGE change in openings probably starting last October. I went from a spare email or call back to a number of companies getting on contact with me more...or at least reaching out to me, whether I was perfectly qualified or not. Maybe it's just the industry I work in (video production), but it also seems a lot of people I know (in various fields) who have been looking forever have found new positions in the last few months, too....anyhow, point is I've seen a big shift in the job market for the good.

Well, I don't disagree with you there. The massives will always be doing well, especially because they're open to a younger audience.
I know that 1015 Folsom recently changed their music format, so all the clubbers that used to go there on Saturday nights are probably hitting up Ruby now.
