Mini Review:
Full disclosure: I go to Ruby Skye frequently and usually have a great time. I like the people who work there, enjoy the venue layout, sound and rarely complain about shows there.
Also, I just want to mention that i thought the production quality of last night's show was pretty good...The Size Matters production was pretty well done, though repetitive, still a very nice plus compared to normal shows, with confetti drops, streamers, and air canons on stage.
But, the crowd was meh at best:
- Lots of smelly people (like i smelled BO at various areas within the club)
- heavy on the dude factor
- this chick was rolling balls and didn't look like she knew where she was, swaying all over head falling, while some creeper holding her upright...my girl told messed up girl's friend to get her out of there (and also handed her her purse which she'd dropped); lots of swayers in general last night
The music...
The music was painfully bad. I probably knew all but 1 or 2 songs. AN21/Vangeli opening were better than Angello, playing a few fun cool songs, but played an opener set and slowed it down as they usually do.
I know full well what i'm getting when i go to an SHM show, but Angello played such boring big room songs that are all so so soooooo played out, it was disappointing and had no personality at all. If other people liked it, I'm happy for them, but for me, that show just pushed me further away from "big room house" (which with it's overly epic builds is sounding more and more like trance).
When axwell played, he had some banging tracks mixed in with the SHM brand of cheese...i can take the cheese/commerical stuff, but you got to have something original, surprising, exciting.
Sorry for the mini rant, i'm sure lots of people thought it was amazing, but I listen to electronic music to hear something new, whether it be a great mix, a unique sample or remix, or just a new banging track. Last night's show featured virtually none of that. If i liked listening to played out songs, I'd go to top 40/hip hop clubs.
Sorry for the mini rant...words can't describe how badly I am looking forward to the next dirty bird party (either the park or at mezz) to give me something original. |

Damn, with a minimal announcement, at least 2000 people showed up at the Dirtybird party. The good thing was that most people stood up and danced; if they sat down, there wouldn't be enough space in the park. It looks like Dirtybird is getting bigger and bigger in SF.
