i was at a friends house last night and he told me that when he returned from Cuba a few days ago at canadian customs in the airport he was held for 3 hours for no reason whatsoever, he was told that he matched a description of someone, which is bull, they ripped apart all his belongings and searched through everything and then they spent about an hour looking through his cellphone including txts emails etc. At one point they claimed they would have to keep his phone as evidence and then mail it to him a month later if nothing is found. He then mentioned that hes not going to say anything to customs until cops arrive, they called the cops but eventually they let him go. Such a bizarre ing incident, my friend is not a druggy or anything like that and has a decent job etc etc |

so a citizen of that particular country should be exempt from any form of search because there is no chance he could be a terrorist or whatever?
i think if you are already in the country and you get stopped by local cops then they dont have a right to treat you like that but if you leave the country and are returning then they have a right to do whatever is in their power. afterall, nobody knows what you left the country for. |
Because a citizen has the right to live without fear of arbitrary government interference. This is no different than a cop stopping yiou on the street and forcing you to give them your cell phone for no apparent reason other than just being there. If you agree with that, then i suggest you move to some totalitarian state like iran or north korea |

Android gathering location data too, researcher develops harvesting tool

As enraged as you may or may not be over the fact that your phone is tracking your location, you have to admit… it’s a pretty interesting story. The Wall Street Journal has filed a new report stating that both Apple and Google are collecting location data from their smartphone users — deflecting some of the public outrage in Google’s direction as well. “According to new research by security analyst Samy Kamkar, an HTC Android phone collected its location every few seconds and transmitted the data to Google at least several times an hour,” writes the Journal. Researcher Mike Castleman has developed a program that will harvest and parse location data stored on your Android device. The script isn’t quite as user-friendly as its iOS counterpart — you need root access to your device and some command line experience (as opposed to just clicking on a pretty icon and seeing your coordinates on a map) — but it will present you with a formatted location list. Castleman notes that the code used to collect location is “no longer open from Google” and that the data collected gets “pruned” when new location information is added. “Following the latest days internet outrage/overreaction to the revelation that iPhone has a cache for its location service, I decided to have look what my Android devices caches for the same function,” Castleman writes. If you’re interested in trying to squeeze the location information from your Android handset, hit the jump. The necessary links are waiting for you.

it was the canadian border that did this.. not the US side |
Ya, once coming back from a trip to the US, after searching me for an hour and finding nothing, Canadian customs took a 2 pg list of phone #'s I had printed up (I think I had been using a US SIM card or phone, and didn't feel like entering hundreds of phone #'s into it, so I carried a printout with me), and they took it in back and copied it. I was like, WTF is that ??? |

Canadian customs is actually more brutal than the US. The americans are rude and snarky sometimes but they do their thing and move on. The ive had to endure many times coming back to my own country has been ridiculous.
The time i was pulled over at the airport because i was entering montreal and i lived in toronto (BIG CRIME) and told i was a liar under a video camera interview. God forbid you come back from holidays to montreal so you can visit friends before heading to toronto! They finally released me after 3 hours and multiple searches.
Or the time i was called a drug dealer when they found a bundle of flyers in my car.
Or the time the searched my phone and questioned me on everyone and everything in there including pictures.
Or the time that i forgot to declare an extra $10 in purchases (i gave them receipts for everything else and was willing to pay tax.) The guy was telling me he was going to confiscate my car. Cooler heads prevailed when i complained to another officer and he must have taken care of the problem. I still had to pay the $1.50 on the undeclared portion... douchetards!
ing retards.
The big diff is that canada border patrol are part timers and students on a power trip whereas US is the real deal. The US side is curt and rude at times but they dont waste time on bull. When ive been pulled over there its been 20 mins max. |

| I practically have anxiety attacks at any country's customs & immigration process due to my experiences with the Canadians, but I fear them the most. since I am forever marked as a potential illegal alien in canada, I avoid flying up there because if I did for sure I'd be sent the the back or special screening area, while in my car my chances of getting thru w/out interrogation are much better. |

I only had to deal with the Canadian border people like once, because I didn't have my Nexus card seeing my buddy didn't have one. He ended up buying some sort of supplements and what not. Still had to stop, I gave to the border people, seeing they told me what I told them was a mistake. Whipty do dah day, anyways he was stuck paying the taxes, but it still was cheaper to buy in the States. It is funny, they get pissed off when you purchase stuff in the US. Actually there one time I told them, I came back a day earlier than expect. The guy was giving me like giving me a dirty look and acting all tough. I told him, I got pissed off at my friend and left her in New York (which is completely true). After that the guy came down from his power trip.
I just love using my Nexus, don't have to deal with anyone. Only on seldom occasions I have to talk to someone before entering the US lol
Maybe we should take away their guns and they wont act so tough ;) |
