The electronic music collective Monitor
blows a unique sound with its first, eponymous, album

Montreal, April 11, 2011 – Above and beyond the rhythms and the sounds, electronic dance music reflects its very own state of mind. The collective Monitor is here to confirm that truth in the finest possible way with its first album, whose launch will take place at the after-hours club Circus on Thursday, April 21, from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m., as part of the 17th edition of Montreal’s White Party Week. With DJs Erik El and Bruno Brown joined by musician-composers Jean-Michel Lapointe and Nicolas Maranda, the new electro quartet takes full advantage of its enormous experience to create an original sound that transcends the club world. Solid rhythms, spellbinding atmospheres, captivating vocal collaborations – Monitor blends powerful ingredients on the 10 original productions and 2 inspired remixes that make up this eponymous disc, its tech-house underpinnings expertly colored with minimal influences and a staunchly underground sensibility. Music that affects the body and mind with a formidable effectiveness.

Right off the bat, Monitor plunges us into the heart of nighttime with the atmospheric “Noctillion,” then invites listeners to a rhythmic meditation session with “Blissful,” punctuated by the teachings of veteran yoga instructor Yasmin Fudakowska-Gow. Spanish for “good-looking,” “Guapa” possesses all the attributes of its title, moseying along to a bewitching electro-Hispanic rhythm. With the soul-filled voice of Nicole Jones (also the host on the CTV cultural program City Lites), “Go Down” draws us irresistibly upwards on the strength of a driving beat straight out of Chicago. As creative with a remix as with an original, Monitor carries on making their own good luck with their new version of François Lebaron’s outstanding “Dice Roller,” recorded with the singer Dee. California’s Rossita Dove is up next to apply her sulfurous voice to the insistent rhythm of “Bonboni,” blending the exotic timbre of the Bulgarian language with an explicit sensuality. The soaring “Monitor Remix” of the classic “Time” by Cravo & Canela (Miguel Graça and Trevor Walker) kicks off the last leg of this fascinating sonic journey, which concludes at high intensity with “Two Bodies.”

A powerhouse!

Formed in late 2009, the collective Monitor brings together the complementary talents of several well-established figures on the Montreal electronic scene, starting with DJ Erik El and producer–keyboard player Jean-Michel Lapointe, who first made a name for themselves in the early 2000s as leaders of the band Couch Potatoes. A highly active DJ since that time, Erik El next distinguished himself in a duo with colleague Bruno Brown, creating the renowned Physical and KulturKlub evenings. Guitarist-composer and producer Nicolas Maranda forged a strong reputation with his contribution to a number of acclaimed projects, include the soundtracks for the television programs 19-2 and Minuit Le Soir. Now united in Monitor, the four collaborators are devoting themselves entirely to a single goal: creating the best music there is.

Released on the Montreal label Mile End Records, the album Monitor is distributed by Outside Music and will go on sale on April 21. Tickets for the launch will be available at the door at a cost of $10 (with invitation: includes the album and admission) or $15 (without invitation: includes the album and admission).
