This is not liquid, I already know most of these and you've totally stolen the ending of my last mix.
I'll give it a listen. |

| Yeah your last mix led me to that ektoplasm release which I'm grateful to you about. Didn't mean to offend you by using it as well, it's a genre I'm not really familiar with so I have to start somewhere which were your 2 dnb mixes. If it's not liquid, how would you describe it then? |

I'm not offended. I'm always secretly pleased when I see people have been stealing my weapons. Although I'd advise you to dig a little deeper. I know as well as anyone that there's not too much of this stuff being made, but 70% of this mix is from one label (Offworld).
I'd call this atmospheric. Liquid for me is the more house-influenced stuff, with strings, pianos and soulful samples. Still chilled, but a different vibe. There are a couple of tracks here that I haven't heard that could go more in that direction, but overall this is too spacey, too synthy. |

Interesting mix. You're an unusual DJ. The mixing was, for the most part, very good. You weren't shy in where you mixed in and out of tracks, everything was well phrased, harmonic and especially well EQ'd. 18 tracks in under 80 minutes is impressive stuff, especially for someone like me who tends to be very reverent of track structures. All of this points towards someone with a bit of experience under his belt.
And yet... there are a few aspects of this mix that scream "inexperienced DJ". While you managed to create a decent flow, there really isn't much direction here, and it often sounds like you're just following the path of least resistance. Mass Effect is a pretty energetic and full-on track to play so early in the mix, and you immediately dropped the energy right back down with Amaryllis, so you've got this unusual spasm of energy near the start. The ending is predictably pumping, but there's no real build-up to it. One minute you're playing a chilled liquid-y vocal track, the next minute we're straight into some borderline neurofunk. How much planning did you put into this set?
The tracks were mostly very good, as expected. Overall the mix was an entertaining listen and would probably be best appreciated by someone new to this sound. |

I agree with what you've said. I'm used to playing prog house & melodic techno so I love long blends. I tried to do the same in this genre (mainly cause I'm forced to since I'm unfamiliar with cuts :p) I am happy that you liked the eq'ing, this was my first time every playing dnb and during this set I was sometimes surprised how the eq's effected the sound as compared to my normal cup of tea.
Structure-wise I agree there isn't a clear direction, mainly since my pool of dnb tracks is quite limited. Since I want to do long blends, I was sometimes forced to pick a track that would harmonically fit but wasn't logical in an energy sense.
I guess this is something that will come naturally as I dig deeper. :) Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. |
