looking for a boat for 20-30 persons - 23 July 2011

My close friend's milestone bday falls on Sat July 23rd. We are finalizing the securing of a dj with equipment. We'd likely rent a generator if the power output on the boat is not sufficient for the sound system.

From research thus far, seems like the boats around Mtl are super-huge (i.e. over 100 persons). Or, they are 2+ hours away. We're looking for something intimate for about 20-30 people. I think every person would be up to paying in the neighbourhood of $50 for their share. We'd prefer someone operate the vessel so that no one needs to worry about this responsibility. Also, that it be roughly within a hour's drive from Mtl - the closer the better. The boat outing would likely be from aprox 2PM and run for a few hours. A suitably-sized sailboat, houseboat, barge - anything that floats - would be fine as well. If it is partially covered, in the event of rain, I think that would be a great asset. The bday boy's wife and I want to surprise him with this, and no, he's not on TA ;) We're all househeads though!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have !

I had a friend's 30th bday on a Yacht in the old port/St-Lawrence a few years ago. I'll try to dig out the info. Pretty sure it was a few grands for the rental. It came with with a captain and a bartender (cash bar inside the boat), it had a BBQ (bring your own food...we had a chef cooking on board for us). Lots of room to dance inside and a big deck out front. Boat was a bit old but still that was the pimpest birthday party I've ever been to. We set up a small DJ booth and monitor on board. There was 30 of us but still lots of room (was perfect that way).

Ran for about 6 hours, from 7pm till 1am. We left from the old port and sailed to the south shore and back. Sun set underneath the JC bridge, with beats rocking and champagne flowing = priceless. It was so awesome. We partyed like bitchin Miami rockstars !

edit: pretty sure it was this one

the prices are reasonable, and if you want food to be included it is pretty good as far as these things go.

at 50$ a piece though you might not be able to do much at all...

Well, this is a most overdue response, but Passskal, many thanks for your recommendation for the yachtprive.ca , it worked beautifully for my friend's big 4-0 last July. About 20 of us had the boat with cash bar. We negotiated a 2 grand price and got it from 2-6PM. For anyone interested, it was fully staffed (captain, bartender). Our dj bailed on us, but we made us of their Bose sound system, which delivered impressive sounds. Only issue was their cd player overheating / skipping after some time. We simply plugged in a smartphone after. The staff were very friendly and helpful and kept fanning the cd player to try to cool it down! Lots of us were busting moves on the front part of the vessel and could not beleive the coincidence that went we went under a bridge near the old port, Greg Gow's ``the bridge`` played off my random mix. Good times, good times!

We were quite comfortable with 20-24 of us, and you could likely get up to 30 comfortable on board.
