With J00F EDITIONS (BRIGHTON) rapidly approaching, we caught up with newly appointed resident JIM ROUND...
Q.
Hello Jim!! How are you today?
A.
Very well thanks. Just walked the dog and getting ready to spin some tunes. After that I’ll be hitting Facebook to promote our next event. Hopefully I’ll have time for dinner and the wife but I doubt it
Q.
How was your last JOOF Editions night? What was it like to play with JOOF himself?
A.
Our launch event was very special – a culmination of two months of hard work and planning by the J00F team but it was so worth it! H Bar is a beautifully intimate venue that attracts nice happy people – a perfect setting for a night like J00F Editions that aims to take dance music back to its routes. The crowd was awesome and the tunage flowed all night. Plus our engineer James Britten put in a sound system that shook the very foundations of the building. Brilliant!
Playing alongside John ‘00’ Fleming was a mind-blowing experience. He was playing clubs back when I first started clubbing over ten years ago, so I felt privileged to warm up for him. To be honest I was very nervous before I went on, but John soon put my mind at ease. It was the first time I met him properly and his love of dance music is highly infectious. Legend!
Q.
So you’re a JOOF Editions Resident? How did that come about as we know JOOF is very picky! ☺
A.
Well my first connection with J00F was through his manager James Wylie. I’ve worked with James before on other nights and when I moved to Brighton he put us in touch. They say it’s who you know after all!
As to the residency I hope it was the result of the hard work I, like everyone else on the J00F Editions team, put in to make the night a success. Plus John tells me he really enjoyed my set, which is a big compliment!
Q.
So you have been in this industry for some time now as a regular clubber in your youth, and running your very successful nights ‘Elusive’ in the midlands- what do you miss about the scene today?
A.
I miss the electric atmosphere that made trance nights at big super clubs so utterly renowned. Everyone knew everyone – one big happy family and best of all, no attitude! When the scene began to shrink big clubs were left three quarters empty and much of this disappeared, which is a great shame. Fortunately J00F Editions is sparking this vibe off once more, which feels amazing.
Also, as time has gone by I have grown older and progressively more sensible. While this allows me to focus on promoting and DJing, I do miss the days of spontaneous clubland adventures and disgracefully messy after parties with other like-minded individuals! LOL!
Q.
Airwave is the special guest at the prestigious JOOF Editions - are you excited? And what can we expect from you on the night?
A.
I am very excited about the next event, especially with a well-established legend like Airwave taking to the decks. AND we’ve got John ‘00’ Fleming and a warm-up from Dan Ascherl! Sometimes I wonder how we can let people in for a fiver apiece! The main room is going to rock on June 4th!
The bar will be my domain for this event. I’ve got some people I know joining me behind the decks and together we plan to take people on a musical journey through house and into some breaks at the end.
J00F has made me responsible for organising DJ’s and artists for the bar on a running basis. I feel this is an important role because it’s the first room people walk into when entering the club and we must strike the balance of keeping things chilled early on while entertaining those who want to dance later.
I actually love playing house. It’s so much more relaxed than trance so a nice break, but I am looking forward to playing alongside J00F again at a future event.
Q.
What is the best thing about being a part of JOOF Editions?
A.
Well being part of such a big brand and working alongside a legend such as J00F feels great. We have a very strong team and people have naturally settled in to their individual roles, which we are carrying out with passion and competence. It’s nice seeing the trust between us begin to grow.
Best of all though, J00F Editions is putting trance back on the map in Brighton. Our launch event was very busy, which shows we truly do have an audience. This was very rewarding after all the hard work we put in. At the end of the day, what makes or breaks a night in the end are the numbers. So hopefully people will continue to support our event.
I also love the underground ethos of J00F Editions. No frills, no oversized egos, just pure music. For me personally, being back behind the decks alongside big names feels incredible too.
Q.
What are your summer plans?
A.
Well my first priority is J00F Editions, so I will continue to work hard on that over the summer. I would like to get into production at some point but it’s just finding the time. I am also hoping to get some more DJ bookings in over the next few months too.
I did want to put on some kind of outdoor festival this summer. I’ve worked with the J00F Editions engineer a long time and I’m always pestering him with new ideas for nights. I must be a continual source of irritation lol! Still, it’s how things like this get organised so I don’t feel too guilty!
Q.
Pick one DJ/Live Act you’d like to work with?
A.
Am I allowed to choose someone who is no longer alive? Am I allowed to choose any artist? I am a massive Michael Jackson fan so to work with him in would have been my dream. Not in this life though! I don’t expect he would have given me a second glance anyway hehe.
In terms of DJ’s it would be great to get involved in production and do a few collaborations.
Q.
Favourite Tune at the minute?
A.
I’m really getting into my psy-trance right now and there are a number of tunes across some of the download sites that I’m really into. I’m putting a mix together at the moment so I don’t want to reveal them yet!
Q.
What is your favourite tipple?
A.
Well generally I like my beer, but I have a sweet tooth so I’ll drink things like alcopops and sambuca too. A complete girl haha!
☺
