Tinnitus or not

5 days ago i woke up with a very loud high pitched sound in my right ear. It lasted 3 hours, then faded gradually.
The next day i woke up again with the exact same thing and it lasted 3 hours as well.
However the 3rd day, i woke up in the middle of the night (3.30) with the exact same thing again, but this time it did not fade away. It lasted for 24 ours. I felt like i was going crazy that day. I had to leave the faucet in my kitchen running while i was listening to some background music to be able to sleep again.
On the 4th day i woke up with relief. No ringing at all that day.
Now on the 5th day, its there again.
Now i am wondering if its tinnitus or not, because as far as i know, once you've got tinnitus, it will never go away. |

tinnitus is like tones from a hearing test, odd freqs on occasion and a much diminished sensitivity to hearing.
sounds to me like You have temporary hearing loss. i have had that a few times due to explosions, just have to wait it out a few days. |

Basically I disagree, particularly with the diminished sensitivity.
I have tinnitus, it scared the hell out of me when I first got it. I think I made a post about it 4 or 5 years ago in the DJ Booth.
Now, oddly, I wouldn't be without it. Sounds strange but I get so used to it that on the rare occasions it disappears for a few hours I almost wait for it to return.
Tones from a hearing test..... yes. However there can be a variety of sounds that are heard, commonly I don't hear a tone, I hear a roar or a whoosh, almost like white static interference. And Often it's not necessarily from one ear or the other, it could be from the middle of your head. I find mine is aggravated by caffeine and hot currys!
My tinnitus is an OVER sensitivity to sound, I can hear things that not many other people can, I can hear bats (although I think quite a few people can hear them), those cat deterrents that have a high pitched whine to them that are supposed to be too high for humans to pickup, and I can not bear to be in the same building as a CRT display as they give off a really powerful high pitch sound. It is a rare thing for me to talk to someone who can hear these things. My guess is that my condition came when my brain tuned in and started to notice sounds that were always there but had been ignoring before. I took a hearing test and could hear far better than most people, so my doctor told me.
Also, I found that my tinnitus was far more severe during the early days, and calmed down within a month to a much more manageable level.
You need to see a doctor. There are drugs and treatments available, and the research into this condition is advancing in recent years. I have chosen not to be treated, instead learning to manage the condition myself. |

, I have that as well, over-sensitivity to noise... I don't think I have tinitus though, but I can't stand those background noises :nervous:
How did yours start?? |

| Are you taking any new medications? Tinnitus is a common side effect of lots of stuff. In certain drugs it can actually be a sign of toxicity. |

| One time at midnight at age 17 I woke up feeling like I had a lot of excess water in my ear. It was like the worst swimmers ear I had ever had, it was miserable. I went downstairs to get my parents to apply some swimmers ear drops. When they did, a 2 inch long centipede crawled out. Most ed up ever. :nervous: |
