Sama (pronounced sum-aa or sama') represents a mystical journey of one's spiritual ascent through music and mind, emphasizing a feeling of elation. It was practiced in gatherings of ancient mystics where poetry was accompanied by instrumentation, and reinforced by the repetition of powerful rhythms. We at Samā aspire to establish a night of intimate settings, and to showcase the new-school of emerging talent that lacks representation in New York.

Artist Info:

Brian Sanhaji (CLR | Nachtstrom Schallplatten | Egoton)

When Brian the young innovator, came across a music program on a friend´s Amiga 500, the desire to produce his own sound started to grow within. In the beginning he experimented with Hip Hop beats, but triggered by a “The Prodigy” gig he started focusing more and more on Techno. As much as for many of his contemporaries in the nineties, the legendary “Omen” club in Frankfurt served as a source of inspiration for him. His first two records under the pseudonym “Relic” were released on the label “Triebtäter” in 2000 and 2001.

After this he took the next step and founded his own label “Enable Recordings”, on which he presents artists like “The Advent” or Andre Walter, next to his own productions.

Little by little, Brian got the opportunity to release on further labels as well, for instance “Punkt Music” or “Definition Records”. At the same time he produced the project “Citizen Art” together with the artist ”Cess”,
and amongst others released a remix for “The Horrorist” on “Things To Come”.

But ultimately they were his own releases that turned him into a much requested live act. In the course of his transfer to CLR Booking in 2005, his booking schedule increased from the main floor of “Nature One”, to the
“Detroit Electronic Music Festival” in the States to his preliminary peak at “Spinclub” / Ibiza.

Next to his well-established label “Enable Recordings”, he founded another imprint called “Sonata Music” in the beginning of 2008. Although it was planned as a digital only label, he started releasing the tracks on
vinyl as well, due to the big success.

In October 2008, the album prerelease single “Cortosis” came out, together with a remix by Chris Liebing. In November 2008, the long awaited first Studio album “Stereotype” was finally released on his all-time favorite Techno label CLR. “A stylistically versatile, entirely club oriented record with traces of Minimal, House and Dub, always true to its Techno origins.”

When Brian is not touring as a live act, or producing new tracks and remixes, he is also working as a highly successful mastering technician with clients like CLR, Cocoon Recordings or Spinclub Recordings, just to mention a few.

Eric Cloutier (The Bunker | Down)

Born and bred in Michigan, and currently based in Brooklyn, Eric Cloutier is one of a new generation of American DJs bridging the gap between dance music's past and its future. His sets have a sprawling depth and sophistication that fuses the brooding intensity of tripping techno with the mechanic funk of contemporary house.

Cloutier started spinning records in 1996, quickly establishing himself in Detroit's competitive local scene, holding down residencies at The Necto and prominent afterhours spot The Works. This led to a job booking Oslo, where he brought the likes of Richie Hawtin, Luciano and Michael Mayer to town, as well as handing out residencies to local legends Three Chairs and Stacey Pullen.

In 2006, Cloutier made the jump to New York and quickly established himself, earning a residency at the premiere monthly techno night The Bunker and mid-week soiree Den of Thieves. He's also begun his own night, Down, in which he often stretches out to play lengthy sets that showcase his range, effortlessly threading together deeper shades of house and dub-infused techno. Word has been spreading too: 2009 saw Cloutier recording two mixes for the mnml ssgs podcast series, beginning to work in the studio for the first time on his own material, making his European DJing debut and getting tapped to play at Japan's renowned Labyrinth Festival. That latter honor may be the most telling of all: Only a select few are asked to spin at Labyrinth. (It's the provenance of studious selectors like Daniel Bell, Donato Dozzy and Peter Van Hoesen.) To not only spin in their company, but to have ably held his own should tell you all you need to know about Eric Cloutier: He's a DJ for whom quality—above all else—is the watchword.

Syed Raza [Subfractal] (Harthouse Mannheim | Sleaze Records | Excentric Muzik)

One half of the duo Subfractal, Syed is a relatively recent transplant to New York. Initially starting his musical career in Toronto, where his partner Fahad Ahmed and him met, Subfractal quickly established themselves as staples of the local techno scene.

Having released on reputable labels such as Harthouse Mannheim, Excentric Muzik, Sleaze Records, Bosphorous Underground, Frequenza, amongst others, 2009 saw their remix of Larry Power's 'Milk' at the #1 spot on the highly competitive Beatport Minimal charts for over 6 weeks, furthering their reputations as forward thinking producers.

With features at the Winter Music Conference in Miami and at the Detroit Electronic Music Conference this past year, as well as having played numerous international shows, we can’t wait to see what the new year has in store for them.

Nunzi vs Rohin (BEEF Records)

Originally a production team cultivated a year and a half ago, Nunzi and Rohin are quite new to the New York scene. Nunzi had been producing and DJing for about two years before he met Rohin through a mutual friend at New York University. Since then they have played clubs such as Love, Katra, Webster Hall, various underground parties and multiple venues in Toronto. Last summer marked the release of their first EP entitled "1950" on BEEF records, and since then they have been working on formulating their sound both independently and as a group.
