Your sayings about quality are true only if the original file is in high quality. If you transcode a crappy source in 'high quality', it won't alterate it much and the final transcode will still be crappy, but not more than the original. The soundcloud original is decent but you cannot say it is high quality. By the way, the transcode does not introduce 'noise' as you say, it just does not reproduce the exact spectrum, especially at high frequencies (the less earable ones). So I can tell you the V0 encoding with LAME in Joint-Stereo and no low-pass filter did not change anything in the quality of the stream and didn't make it poorer. This is easy proving it just by comparing the spectrum of the stream and the transcode in any audio editor. No problem about your notices, since I tried what you suggested first but had no result so... old skool FTW :) Have a nice w-e. |

No :), it doesn't have anything to do with frequencies. If you take a lossless file, encode it to 128k, then re-encode to whatever setting or codec, you'll deteriorate the original even more, it's a fact that yours is a -transcoded file-, however you put it :). Transcoding is bad because a file gets through the grind twice. If the extra damage isn't obvious anyway, then it's useless and the 300 MB also useless.
Also, now I don't understand where and how you obtained the "original", lol, you didn't record it, did you? |

Well, it looks like you need to digg a bit deeper in the knowledge of encoding my dear. First notice, I never said I had the true "original" recording, that only Digweed may have, I said I encoded in WAV the soundcloud stream (as this is the only available source available to public, it made it the "original" I mentioned before) to encode it then, making it a transcode, as you pointed out. So your last remark asking me if I had the "original" is a bit stupid imo...
Then here are the proofs of what I explained to you:
1- encoding is a matter of spectrum rendering
2- unless you still have very very good ears and can ear sounds above 16khz (really, lucky you, don't worry it won't last!), V0 and 256kpbs/JS encoding provided a very good quality/fidelity versus the the "original" source, call it what you want.

From these pictures, the most lossy part is my wav grabbing that made my wav pseudo-stereo (right/left chans are the same) and it induced an almost unearable noise above 16.6khz and at very very low power levels (impossible to ear that when you listen the recording to decent volume). The second screenshot shows that the encoding in V0 is perfect until 16.6khz and acts as a low-pass filter above 16.6khz and even more above 19.4khz (who cares since nobody will ear that?), so YES, this is a matter of frequency. Last but not least, I've been encoding stuff for 10 years and studied signal processing, so I think I know the basics and a bit more. |

Oh, JESUS CHRIST :).
You don't record sets and then re-encode them at a different bitrate, period! That's the worst you can do, it's a double nuke and, in any case, it doubles the file-size. Transcoding is always wrong.
Of course the two spectra are identical :D, mate, that's the point!
Instead of wasting your time in Internet quarrels, just read a faq about ripping music from the web, we're all been there, believe me.
