I love my DT880s. When I bought them, it was a tough choice between them and the HD650s, but the BeyerDynamics were much more comfortable to me. I do hear people say that certain headphones are better for certain genres, but I don't believe that - the most important thing is that they are as accurate as possible. |

| Hey guys, I'm thinking about upgrading my old K240 Studios to the 701 or 702. Seems like some of you guys are pretty knowledgeable about these cans, so I'm wondering if you think the upgrade is worth the price. Also, do any of you guys run them straight out of your laptop headphone jacks? I work on the road a lot and I don't usually bring along a soundcard or headphone amp with me, so I need something that will work fine with my Macbook's headphone out. |

I don't have the 701s/702s, but I have the 240s and they've always worked fine with my laptops (Dell, HP, MBA) without a soundcard or headphone amp. I believe that they're only 55 ohms, so most amps can push them pretty easily. My DT880s OTOH are 600 ohms and my laptops' headphone amps can barely push them. It looks like the 702s have an impedance of 62 ohms, so you should be OK (from a loudness perspective) without a dedicated amp/soundcard.
As far as upgrading from the 240s to the 701s/702s, somebody else will have to answer that. The 70Xs are pretty popular, so I'm sure quite a few people here have them. |

| teh K240 isnt really flat! your mixes will be weird using them. they are decent for a second reference only, but not during creative process or mixing. im curious about the 701/2 myself as i need better headphones and a dedicated headphone amp/soundcard. |

That's one of the reasons why I want to upgrade them. I have the studio version and not the mkII, and not even sure what the difference is lol. |

| I'm not sure exactly what the difference between the Studio and mkII is either, but I think I recall reading that the cheaper one (Studio, the ones I have) was made in China and the more expensive one (mkII) was made in Austria? |

| studio clearly states build in austria whatever that means. maybe theyre drawed there? |

That's interesting - maybe yours are older. I'm at work right now, so I can't verify it, but I'm almost positive that the Studios I bought last year were made in China. It seems that maybe AKG moved production of some of its headphones to China a few years ago:

I don't completely disagree with you, but...
First of all, the soundstage is just as exaggerated as any other headphone. It's not like it reproduces sounds in the incorrect place. But perhaps you're referring to the fact that the headphones sound more open than other headphones? This is very different than an "exaggerated" stereo image. I personally have zero issues placing things within the stereo field. I almost feel as if the headphones give you more control than say a set of studio monitors.
Second of all, stop whining about the break in period. Just plug them into your computer, blast music, leave the house and in less than a week they'll be broken in. It's certainly less of a big deal than some studio monitors I've ever had to deal with.
Finally, you completely miss the point of buying the headphones. The entire spectrum is pretty flat, with a bass response that is perhaps 10% too lean. So while I do agree that the bass response is lacking, it should be noted that it's at the cost of making a fairly accurate picture of the entire spectrum. It does a night and day better job of this than say a Sony MDR 7506 or Beats by Dre.
OP:
Overall, I'd highly recommend the AKG K702. They've got a flat frequency response, a great transient response (so you can hear compression and kicks clearly) and they've got great detail (more than you need for a club, but more is better in my opinion).
I have no experience with the other headphones you mentioned. |
