Today`s prog house seems either cheese-candy-like or ambient-like without energetic accents or climaxes imo. I miss the days of banging darkish progressive house. If there is still music similar to this produced today, iŽll rarely find it.

Bump this up 4-6 BPM and it's incredibly powerful. Still powerful at 120 though:

The first two tracks you posted are kind of "ambient" in a way. It's hard to discribe but if there was such a genre, I would call that "progressive ambient house".
The Gus gus track is a little too slow(as you already mentioned)imo. It's main melody is a little too "bright" imo.
The Sasha remix starts off very nice but then it becomes a little bit too much electro-driven.
I must admit that these tracks are very well-produced but there is still something missing imo...maybe a catchy lead-melody.
The "Swain, Snell & Lucas - We Need Space (Main Mix)"-track for example uses a simple but very effective lead melody starting at 2:32

For example, this track is a dark, driving progressive tune with lots of energy but it also misses a non-cheesy lead melody.
In my opinion, this track is almost perfect. Yet it still misses a catchy, non-cheesy and repitive lead melody.
This comes very close to it. :eyespop:
This one has a very nice drive :-)

I really like the Metroid series, but your track is not that dark imo

I see what you mean in what you are looking for mate. No worries then. It seems you're only really going to find what you are looking for in that time period then... very few new progressive tunes are being made with your style in mind.
Honestly, I think the blend of newer sounds with the older sounds is worth a listen. At least it is to me. I find the tracks I linked, especially the first two are dark enough and are not at all ambient sounding like. That might very well just be the pad work, creating a very brooding atmosphere. But, to each their own man, no hard feelings at all.
Although, gonna harp on my buddy MSZ for a sec... he's been trying out an approach atm, with heavy influences to early prog. The atmosphere he creates with these tunes is imo very "dark" and closer to what you are looking for, at least I think so anyways. But, if you want a lead melody, don't think you'll find one in the ones below. Maybe.
P.S. the tracks you posted are vury gud :D Actually, I've been listening to a Quivver set from 2002 from Space (12.13.2002). Been digging the old style a tad more lately. It comes and goes ^.^
