Questions regarding Compressors, Limiters, Dynamic range and mixing?

hello!

i could use a liittle help with things and i wish you guys could drop in and give me your thoughts. It feels like this one part of the puzzle i need to fit in since its slowing me down.

I know what a compressor & limiter is for, basically to alter the dynamic range of a sound. for instance if the kick needs a bit more punch & bite longer attack or if a bassguitar needs a longer sustain more release.

I have been using busscompression a few times and sure enough i get the coherency but sometimes i don't i would love to get the same coherency without depending on busses.

Another thing i also would like to know is how can i get this coherency without a limiter on the master. I have skipped the limiter on many occasion and tried to fiddle with eq but i get these differences, don't how to explain it exaclly (seperation?) the sound in it self doesn't sound full, for instance in peoples tracks you could listen to just the bassdrum by itself and it sounds full, hope it made any sense :P

Also, it sounds like it is 3 different loops playing at the same time instead of them playing together as a unit.

I appreciate & respect what you guys do here and hope you can bring me some clarity in this fuzz.

all the best!

If you like the sound of a compressor on your master buss, and can't get that sound any other way, then keep using a compressor on the master?? It does give a sound that you can't neccsarily get any other way; compressors do glue a sound together, so why are you worried?

Learning this sort of thing comes from experience. Post samples and get feedback to get a head start.

You are asking loaded questions. There are tons of tutorials out there about this is noone is going to answer your questions aside from giving very basic explanations.
You need to learn through years of experience how sounds react to certain changes. Its more of an instinctive thing and it can sometimes be very difficult to explain with specifics.

But like someone said if the bussing gives you a sound you like, why avoid bussing? I always bus my sounds BECAUSE it will give me an effect I can't get in other ways. I'm sure as hell not going to look for another way of doing it. So thats fairly stupid all by itself. Read and watch tuts, and submit samples/ask SPECIFIC questions every week or w/e. Give it a lot of time and sure enough you'll improve.

advice:
- there are no rules
- if it sounds good it is good
- we can not spoonfeed u skill, you need to try and learn yourself.

I would like to know, do you guys cut vengeance, wave-alchemy and so on kick samples low end away? Many people claims to cut at 30hz off? With what filter slope? What this helps? Cause if i cut my kick at 30hz, the whole song's low end doesn't match to the "pro's" songs in analyzers. Uhm..

just slap on a analogue sidechain and raise the gain about 40dB and you will be the next super star.
