GU007 - Oakenfold in New York **Classic**

I dug this double mix cd out of my small cd collection here the other day, and I must say, I'm happy I did it.
Cuz this one of the best albums I own, along with Sasha's Ibiza album. :)
Back to the subject, allright, some of the transitions is not so "well" done, but the whole album is so emotional, and so "sad".
This album is rather a journey, than just a double cd. Close your eyes and let Oakenfold be your guide trough New-York.
Quote from the sleevenotes:
Like the famous French Beer,Paul Oakenfold is reassuringly expensive. Ice Cool and Effortlessly satisfying. If he was leather, he'd be Gucci, a car Mercedes, a footballer Ryan Giggs. As it is he plays banging trance, trippy house and dreamy breakbeats: soft like velvet, sharp like German steel, gleaming like a Rolex. He's an operator, a shaker, a mover, the expert, the kind of man you want in charge. In control. At the centre of things. At the decks. He's a producer and a record company man. But most of all, he's a DJ.
(..)
Recorded in New-York, and devoid of the kind of dance hits left for Football Focus, this two cd set showcases the intricate bulid, the hand-knitted mixing of today's Oakenfold set. Underground yet unashamedly musical, with plenty of trance melodies and breathy voices ot sweeten the acid.
(..)
Paul Oakenfold does it with incredible calm, even while creating a storm. When there is a job too for your everyday big name DJ. It requires a professional. There is nowhere else to go.

I second that!
I think its the second disc (I havent heard it in a long time) that
just makes me get tears in my eyes, so beautiful and dreamish.
The fact that me and my exgirlfriend always used it when we cuddled
and so on doesnt make it any better. :D
Anyway, Oakie really knew his stuff, I really hope he returns to what
I call his roots. |

Oakie will never return to his 'roots' for he has chosen the root of many evils.....money. |

I totally agree. GU - NY is a true classic in every sense of the word. Its Oakenfold capured in his prime. It certainly ranks right up there with my favorite albums of alltime. Not a dull moment on either cd. Class all the way.
Ya I kinda miss the old Oakey stuff. Its no secret that he has gotten too "mainstream" for his own good. Can't really blame the guy I suppose. Would be hard to pass up all that coinage being tossed his way. He is only human afterall. |

I don't really know if Oakie has choosen this path because of the money.
If he wanted to make money he should have just adjusted his trance
towards the top 10-boards with a bit of that eurotrance- and
he would make lots of money, but this.. its just so "special".
But I havent seen any salesfigures on it so I dont know if its been
the hit he hoped but I dont think so.
I think Oakie should return to making rocking Essential Mixes and
kickass Gatecrasher gigs, not like the Gatecrasher gig he made
last year which was a total bore.
Altho, if this is what he WANTS to do and he feels strongly about
evolving in the way that he feels is okay, i respect him for it, but
i dont like it. |

There is no doubt that the Oakie NY cd is a classic and one of his better cd's. About oakie going all mainstream, sure the man is going to make his money now but i dont think it will be too long before he returns to his roots and comes back to his best.
:haha: TRANCE ON MY FRIENDS :haha: |

This truly is a classic, and possibly my favourite CD ever! I remember listening to it for the first time, and being taken away on a journey. And then being addicted to disc 1 for months...ahh, those were the days indeed! It's a beautiful CD...and like you all, I wish Oakey would return to this magic style.

That quote from the sleevenotes is so appropriate! I love it! |
