B.C. to modernize liquor laws

By ALLISON LAWLOR
Globe and Mail Update

Vancouver may have once been known as a "no-fun zone" because of strict provincial liquor laws, but new regulations announced Monday will change all that, says the head of an association representing bars and restaurant owners in the province.

The new liquor regulations, announced by B.C. Solicitor-General Rich Coleman, will mean that bars, pubs and restaurants can now stay open until 4 a.m., and that customers will be allowed to take home unfinished bottles of wine.

"We're happy today," said Geoffrey Howes, chairman of the British Columbia Restaurant and Foodservices Association.

Mr. Howes said the association has been pushing for new regulations for over a decade.

"For 10 years we've been faced with ridiculous regulations," he told globeandmail.com., citing regulations that included the size of televisions in an establishment and rules against standing up and moving around a restaurant bar area with a drink.

The number of liquor licensing regulations has been slashed by 41 per cent.

"Instead of enforcing a complex set of outdated regulations, police and liquor inspectors can focus on safety issues like underage drinking, intoxication, overcrowding and illegal liquor sales," Mr. Coleman said in a news release.

Bars, restaurants, pubs and other venues in the province will now be allowed to remain open until 4 a.m., with the approval of local government. Currently such establishments can't be open past 2 a.m., Mr. Howes said.

"We [Vancouver] have a reputation for being a more boring city," he said, adding that the new regulations will change that reputation.

Restaurants will now face fewer restrictions. They will be allowed to set aside 20 per cent of their space to a lounge where customers will legally be able to get an alcoholic beverage without ordering food.

The new regulations announced Monday will also allow customers to take home a bottle of wine they opened but didn't finish, as long as the bottle is resealed.

The government also announced tougher rules to fight underage drinking. People who appear under the age of 25 must now show two pieces of identification before being served a drink.

The province will lift the moratorium on new beer and wine stores, effective immediately.

"We will see more private stores selling alcohol," Mr. Howes said.

Last month, Competition Minister Rick Thorpe announced B.C. would privatize its liquor industry over the next three years.

>>> As was mentioned on TNC.com, we should organize a public rally at Queens Park and demand that they change the laws in Toronto as well!!!

yeah, 2 pieces of ID for what? You know that ehy are real s in TO when it comes to showing ID. No healthcards, no Coolege/Univeristy IDs and so on. Inst4ead tehy want you to buy a B.Y.I.D which you gotta spend money for and that is what they want you to do. But having the bar open until 4 AM would be Excellent.. Except for when it is Carabana lol

Are you blind or do you just pretend to be that way??

This thread was taken off of toronto nightclub.com, hence the TNC.com at the bottom of my post; where they got it I have no clue; maybe off a newspaper or something.

Tribe is that last place I go for meaningful, factual info, in fact I don't go there at all!
