I think I'm going to start making this type of terrible music just to put my money where my mouth is. Sounds boring/too simple and all the cheesy stutters and beeps just sound random and gay. This is why I'll never like electro or house music, trance is much better at setting a mood and taking you somewhere. This just bounces around endlessly and seems cold and unengaging. Good to put me to sleep. And whats the deal with making grooves out of random fx I hate that . Just line up as many fxs as you can, stop/start the beat 1000 times and you're gold.
Next time someone criticizes one of my tracks I'll remember what you're all really into. This garbage. :D
Please, tell me which one of these two electro house tracks is better:
Anyway, I really appreciate the kind of cheerful "Complextro" style Madeon is sporting, and that's the reason he's my favourite house musician. Also, I'd actually think trance (all styles) would fit really with complextro, they same way trance is fitting well with classical music, heavy metal and top 40 pop.

Ok I see what you're saying because although I didn't like either track I found the first one particularly hard to listen to. The vocals were the first thing I didn't like and then the melody became far too repetitive and it wasn't even good enough in the first place to play as long as they did. So track 1 was terrible. Not enough variation and lost my interest almost immediately, then it was a struggle just to keep listening.
Track 2 was easier to listen too, I liked the idea of the melody, but think he could have taken it somewhere better. Or he could have added some counter melodies that added more resolution. It just felt incomplete. And even if he changed that I honestly don't like the sounds at all.
I think thats my real problem with electro is the sounds that come along with it. It would be impossible to describe what I mean but I like serious sounding music. A lot of electro sounds too "perky" or "happy" I'm using the totally wrong words too but thats the best I can describe it. In trance sometimes you hear dark serious moods, and then there is the contrast or release of something inspiring and happy. But even the happy melodies can sound serious. With electro theres too much "giddiness" going on if that makes sense. Even when they get dark in mood all the chirps, chips, bleeps and blops kinda of ruin it. I wish I knew more about music so I could describe what I mean more accurately but I'd have to say 2 is better, although I didn't like either one at all.

I know I keep going back to my own electro but if you think there's no dark electro you're absolutely nuts.
You have no idea what you're talking about. And One by Swedish House Mafia isn't electro house, wtf?
And why do you keep insisting electro consists of "bleeps and blops?" It doesn't... that's a particular almost subgenre of electro known as "complextro," think Porter Robinson, Skrillex, some of Lazy Rich's stuff, Darth & Vader, Feed Me, Wolfgang Gartner, among others. But Dada Life for instance never, ever does the crazy complex sound. Neither does Deadmau5 for that matter. Felguk doesn't... A lot of Spencer & Hill's isn't, some of Electrixx isn't, some of Zedd'z isn't....
Dirtyloud does both in almost equal amounts, with his tracks Dirt and Afternoon containing pretty much none of it:
You just don't listen to the genre..

There are terrible "complextro" tracks that are created when people just load a bunch of samples onto a pad and hit them at random, but I actually create every single synth sound, I don't use any samples and my tracks have an obvious groove to them.
You listened to Venom and liked it and it's electro... my tracks always have a vibe to them too and I utilize breakdowns in a fashion that a lot of electro artists don't.
That's one of my older tracks Seventeen. There's no way you can tell me that's cold and emotionless. You're just being ignorant. You don't listen to electro so all you hear is the stuff that hits the radio or gets posted on here.
Here's my track Venom which you said you liked, you mean to tell me that this has no anticipation? The second drop is completely unexpected and goes all complextro... and if you think it's not groovy then you're nuts.
Not to mention you're complaining about simplistic grooves when you make TRANCE. Trance hardly ever has anything even resembling a groove. It's so rigid and boring most of the time.
You think electro is simplistic and boring but I put trance on before I go to bed because it makes me fall asleep and I'm not being sarcastic. I literally have a trance playlist called "sleep." I'm baffled that you think electro sounds simple and easy to make.
Honestly I swear you need to lay off the cocaine.
You are right that a lot of trance can have simplistic grooves but the type I listen to usually does not. And the problem is probaly like you said that all the electro I hear is the they play on the radio. But also is the fact that electro does not tend to use any "traditional" sounds if that makes sense. And violins isn't exactly what I mean I mean more that electro just seems to go for the weird quirky sounds that I hate in sample packs.
And like I said in the above post so many of the sounds just seem "giddy". Mainly the percussion I find. I like the darker sounding type percussion (like in deadmau5's sample pack if you go to "junk percussion" then "knocks" those are what I mean kind of like a dark woody tom sound) but the blips, beeps, and blops usually come off too "bubbly" and corny. An example of this if you have Alchemys Drums sample pack and go to the "glitch" sounds most of them have that characteristic. Although there are still some really cool sounds in there all those glitch sounds are just too overused from there. They should just be used as "seasoning" imo and people are constructing entire drum grooves out of them.
I honestly don't care though about rules as much as I do the sound it winds up making. Maybe a good way of me explaining what electro sounds like would be if you took a drunk atari machine then threw it in a blender and randomly started/stopped that blender every few seconds. The atari would start shouting all these corny types of sounds untill it gave you a headache.
Thats the best way to explain how my brain reacts to this music.
Quickly about your tracks.
You ARE definitely right about your brand sounding different than what I'm use to. And it does absolutely sound different in a better way. The intro in the first song is really cool and right around 60 seconds I love the atmosphere you created. Around 1:40 on the first drop though something about the main melody bothers me. I think it happens too quickly and should have been introduced in fragments first to create a bit of tension. It just seems like the melody gets repetitive literally by the second time it plays. I don't know would have just broke it up a bit initially or done something to variate it.
My favorite part of the track unfortunately starts at 5 minutes and it gets even better after that point. But I think you should have made that part your first drop instead of putting it at the end. You could have just focused on the bassline and left the melody totally out at that point, maybe even added some percussion. The bass was ing brilliant imo, and you could have really showed it off in the first drop.
Track 2 nice intro again. Love the distorted melody sounds very warm. The beeps add some nice contrast too. The first drop is sick and I notice this in a lot of electro but it seems its a bit too "dry". Like I would have added a tense pad or something to dress up the atmosphere and add some dissonance. But the bass is sick and it hits pretty hard. Venom is a good track though and I honestly forgot what it sounded like by now so thanks for reminding me.
Overall I can't complain about what you're doing because you seem to be taking electro into a better place than its been. Compared to every single one of madeons tracks that were posted in this thread your 2 were the least difficult to listen to. Whether I feel like I actually like them though is another story. I think I like venom but one thing both tracks were lacking was a mean percussion line to compliment that bass. I'm really into bass/drums and its usually the first thing I focus on. Guess everything comes down to invidual taste but for the most part keep doing what you're doing and I have to agree with most of what you said.
The real issue is I just don't like the style of electro in general. Maybe if I looked harder though I might find some underground artists that suit my taste. Your style is good and I think it can be taken a bit more extreme, bigger breaks and drops, more dark dissonant sounds, maybe some atmosphere as the beat plays, don't be afraid to play the bass without a melody in your first drop, and if you start working on your drums/percussion you can really master the style you're going for I think.
I'm not sure what the style is exactly the way you want to master it, but it definitely has potential.

Heh, well thank you. I do the dry sound intentionally because it sounds absolutely massive on a good sound system, when things get overly layered it sounds muddy.
But if you like mean percussion check out this one:

1st one is obvious better.

If we're going to talk darker electro, we can go even heavier than what's here if we including stuff with industrial influences. With a lot of this stuff, there's a lot of blurring with hardcore/EBM/goa stuff, too.
Yep.
skyhunter
Haha this dark electro you guys are posting is the exact opposite of what I think of when I hear Dark Electro.... More experimental Gothic industrial type stuff. I guess that's older then what the kids listen to now.
psymon.d
yeah, that's not dark, but then again, i listen to burial and ben frost so maybe it is relatively so

Yeah, it's all relative. I mean, I wasn't exactly talking Aphex Twin- Come to Daddy dark, but Robby was talking about darker trance and in that case dark trance probably sounds like bubblegum pop compared to some of the industrial tunes. The electro I posted is certainly dark enough to compare with the darker trance tunes.
