for me, 2002 sucks for trance but awesome for other genres of music.
I havent heard a whole lotta trance tunes this year that got me going all that much. |

agreed
but also:
2002 not for the trance itself but for the direction it's heading!here in holland the whole trance scene is going commercial!! most trance tunes are on tv and a lot of stupid cheeze producers are totally ruining the scene!! dj sammie and gigi d'agostino are considered trance just because there have sythns in the tracks... pleeeeaaassse people are you really that ignorant.. it's just sooo annoying!!
btw 2002 is the year of rip offs (commercially-like)!!
but trance-like 2002 is quite good year, so far! :D |

I find at the moment there is a massive amount of crap vocal trance being released. The amount of good tunes to crap tunes has dropped from around 1:10 to around 1:20. But the tunes that are good are VERY good. Some absolute gems this year.
Funny how people always say trance is on the rise when the commercial trance pop garbage is riding high in the charts, it was the same in the "golden era" of 98-99.
For me late 2000 early 2001 sucked severly! |

99 was amazing
2000 was alright
2001 was a bit crap
2002 so far has been really good, although there is a bit of a drought atm :( |

| I only began listening to trance in the middle of 01 so I cant really say, however I do think that ranking the best/worst years is rather unimportant as well as unrealistic. I mean the tunes come out, thats whats important, whe it came out isn't. Besides everyone has different tastes, you can't set any hard standards for mesuring them against each other :d |

i dont think they were trying to set standards, but show when the best trance in their opinion came out! i thought 99 was a great year for trance beause of the songs that came out! but i thought 2000 was poor because most ppl tried to break into the trance scene to make money ie ATB, DJ jean, alice dj etc etc! ie they commercialised trance and therefore downgraded it IMO not because it went commercial but because they prefered to make money rather than a mint tune! but there was still some excellent songs from 2000dont get me wqrong but the ratio of awsome songs to cheese! IMO cheese outweighed trance and thats why i thought trance struggled in 2000! but i think there are artists out now who WANT to make trance for the love of the music and money is a bonus to them! thats why i beleive trance has changed direction and got away from the euphoric dreamy trance and turned into a harder progressive even agressive genre! to me im glad its gotten away from all the vocal dreamy love song trance and reinvented itself, cos if it hadnt i beleive it woud still be struggling to match the dreamy euphoric 99 anthems! |

ATB - 9pm (Till I come) released in the Jan/Feb 1999
This tune was such a Massive Hit on the dancefloors around the clubs worldwide you wouldn't even believe. eg. Ibiza..many clubs in the UK etc. I recieved an excellent response when I played this tune to all my mates.
No doubt that ATB's tunes were overplayed. However, I believed that he wanted to churn out something genuine with his equipment. Money or not, that's besides the question. We all luv the "greens".
It's all a matter of time frame. That song as many would say is so over and played out and so damn 99. It's human nature to search for a rare tune to appreciate judging by the way you guys diss Armin, Tiesto, Corsten what-not.
DJ Jean - The Launch released in late 99/Jan 2001
Ultimately the worst drags on sounds I've ever allowed my ear drums to experience voluntarily or involuntarily. I really have to speak up on this tune although I am not a professional music critique. Very hot on the dance floors too.
I honestly cannot stand this tune at all. However, this tune does have Hard House elements and by late 1999, people were in search of a new genre as too many trance tunes have been overplayed out due to massive demand.
2000 was certainly a year where we demanded more good tunes than we digested. Not a bad year though, Tiesto and Ferry Corsten carried on with their contribution with Walhalla although both had a busy schedule.
Alice DeeJay - Better off alone [released in mid-1999 first heard on Jules Clubber's Guide to Ibiza]
--> absolutely a nice choon to dance to, however I did find the vocals cheesy at first. Also very played out and they did earn quite a bit from record sales.
Alice DeeJay - Back in My Life [next follow-up single released in 2000]
---> I still love this track so much be it cheesy or not. It's how one feel when listening to a song, not others. Be true to yourself. The Thrillseekers remix totally astounded me. As for Dreaming of You, you can tell that the 2 brothers have real talent in making vocal tracks.
My point to all these is that Muzik itself is a progression, a congregation of participants and producers going in an exponential growth. There are numerous of trance addicts, progheads, house lovers joining the music scene. If you take a listen to most 99 trance CDs, you'll easily find amazing tunes that will take your breath away. Just let the sc3ne Gr0w! |

he may have wanted to churn out a top tune yes but that riff! how many songs did he put it into?! seriously talk about milking a tune for all its worth! he got about three songs out of that riff! now thats why i say he got into it for the money and not the music! |

Tranceseeker: Taub? is from 1999. And (coincidentally?) also the only track apart from Peran & Yves Deruyter that I've still got in my collection. The rest of the tracks just sort of fell through, and are IMO no match to stuff like
Picotto "Lizard" & "Pulsar" & "Imperiale",
Push "Universal Nation",
AIDA "Far & Away",
Kay Cee "Escape",
Ayla "Ayla Part II" & "Liebe",
Cyrus & The Joker "Milky Way",
Binary Finary "1998 (PVD Remix)",
Planet Fuse "Devotion" & "The Real Face",
DJ Wag "Man on the Moon",
Storm "Storm",
The Gate "Iron Eden",
Mellow Trax "Phuture Vibes",
VDM "Night Express 2000",
Gouryella "Gouryella",
DJ Jurgen "Better off Alone",
ATB "9PM",
Jonah "Sssst...(Listen)",
Rising Star "Touch Me",
Airwave "Above The Sky",
Tandu "Velvet",
Tillmann Uhrmacher & Peter Vries "Bassfly"
which were all 1998/99, I think.
To me, melodic trance have been going down the drain steadily since that period, with fewer good tracks being released each year, almost no original tracks and only one or two tracks a year with the potential to become classics. :(
This year, however, have seen a upturn in the number of good tracks released ("Southern Sun", "Solarcoaster", "God Music" and some of Riva's remixes) although they still seem rather formulaic and fail to stand up to giants such as "Café del Mar" IMO. |
