As someone who's worked with them, I've heard some Natives complain because they were seen as a whole unified group and not as individual communities.

So the proper term would be "Navajo", "Cherokee" or "Hipster".

Well since they got here first, they get to be called the native population. But that's not important compared to the fact that they were always incorrectly called Indians since they have NOTHING to do with the country of India...
