Dear west coasters.. I might be moving to the LA area from Florida. What are good/safe cities to live in? I've never been out west soo... I've been looking at Culver City, and I've been told that anything west of LA is good. I'm willing to spend about max 1500-1600 rent a month.. the cheaper the better though. I've totally scratched Santa Monica off the list though. And the closer to the job site the better ( Which I think it's around the Beverly Hills area ). Just a scoop and insight on some areas is appreciated thanks ! ( Oh and nothing that's sea level my wife it's kinda freaking out with the whole tsunami ordeal )

Westwood and the surrounding neighborhoods are a nice area and there are decent apartments on Bundy.

traffic is ed around this city, so living close to your place will be most ideal. parts of culver city is ok - downtown culver city is booming right now. you will find decent priced places in the Palms area.

any place in westwood and santa monica will be very safe. essentially, the father east you go, the cheaper it will get.

most important is as close to work as possible. look at a map. try west hollywood or the hollywood hills foothills (more expensive) or the areas just south of there around the beverly center, the grove or park la brea (www.parklabrea.com). stay away from sunset and santa monica blvds east of fairfax as it can get a bit rough. no problem with tsunamis in these areas either.

See if you can rent a place on the Wilshire Corridor. That is close to Beverly Hills. However many of those units pay that much for HOA Fees so dunno if an owner would rent that low.

It kind of depends on where the job is, but if it's in Beverly Hills than you could rent a place in Studio City or Sherman Oaks and take Coldwater Canyon over the hill to work and back. The commute would be a bit longer, but you could avoid highways and pay much less expensive rent.

What my brother and I did when we moved out here last year was rent a sublet for a month and then used that month to familiarize ourselves with the area and choose an apartment.

i do not recommend commuting from bev hills to valley...hell to the no. its stop and go all the way over the entire hill during traffic.

just to give you an idea, i live in hollywood and work in beverly hills. its 5.1 miles each way. it take me 30-40 minutes in the AM. And 30-50 mins to get home in the PM.

(living in LA all my life)

It's more important to live close to work and pay more rent than commute.

I think Culver City would work for you.

I live in WLA and I work in Culver City, so I go against the traffic both ways. I would actually move if I worked in Beverly Hills.

Culver City is a great spot to live in. Where I lived while I was in LA. It's convenient to Downtown, West LA/Hollywood, Santa Monica, South Bay down to Orange County. And it's a safer area.

Where I lived (northern edge, near Sony Picture Studios) was about a ten minute drive to Beverly HIlls.

My friends dad owns this place http://www.picogateway.com/

Just saw her post something on Facebook....

....Sherman Oaks/Studio City is central but as stated, it is a bitch to commute to/from during rush hour.

You may be able to find a cheap place in Beverly Hills. Many rent cheap places in BH just so their kids can go to Beverly Hills High School.

My brother lives in West Hollywood which is also very close. He says its safe and quiet.

Ah, I wasn't aware, I assumed if you weren't on the 101 or 405 you'd be ok. I guess not. :P

I live in Studio City, but I've only ever worked in Burbank. Living here makes it easy to get to most of the city when it isn't rush hour (plus easy Red Line access), but that doesn't help with work commutes to Beverly Hills.

I'm not a big fan of the Westside, but I have friends in Culver City that like it. Once Phase 1 of the Expo Line is finished, it'll have access to the city's rail network, too.
