I would like to get back to some roots with trance. Please recommend something amazing. I haven't listened to a whole lot of "classic trance" from that time period, just the more popular stuff that was around 96-99. Thanks a lot! :D

These are just a few off my "classics" list:

Orbital - Halcyon On & On
Solar Sun - Seven Cities
Art of Trance - Madagascar
Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar
BT - Dreaming
Svenson, Gielen - The Beauty of Silence
Rapid Eye - Circa Forever
Rank 1 - Awakening

Your reading comprehension is astoundingly terrible, DJRYANtm.

I'll get some recommendations together, OP :)

A lot of the trance guys who are famous today were really good during this time period. Tiesto, Armin, Ferry, Oakenfold; these guys were mixing and making fantastic stuff.

Probably the obvious answer, but you should get onto the early editions of the 'Reactivate' series:

http://www.discogs.com/Various-Reac...l/release/34477

http://www.discogs.com/Various-Reac...a/release/88094

They start include a few more 'known' tracks as the series goes on.

Anything "Gatecrasher" & "Cream" would work too..

DJRyan, he wants stuff from the early 90's, not late 90's. Completely different style of trance to what you have suggested.

The recommendations in this thread are absolutely terrible.

Try these:

http://www.discogs.com/Paul-van-Dyk.../release/831687
http://www.discogs.com/Various-Hart...1-4/release/927
http://www.discogs.com/Various-Five...c/release/87235
http://www.discogs.com/Various-Plat...e/release/21697
http://www.discogs.com/Various-The-...1/release/38805
http://www.discogs.com/Various-The-...ase/72116?ev=rr
http://www.discogs.com/Sasha-And-Jo...n/release/47854

Or if you don't want to hunt around for second hand CDs, these digital compilations are pretty handy:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...m=AE2QNCE40KCLM
Trance-MB
I would recommend starting earlier like 1994 at least:

Trancemaster series already has been mentioned.

Also check these series, Germany released many, many more:

Trance Nation: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Tran...94/master/66564

From Belgium an excellent series which even covers 1991 (first edition) house and multiple genres, worth a listen:

Serious Beats: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Seri...ase/62705?ev=rr

Also from Belgium:
Strictly Trance:http://www.discogs.com/Various-Stri...se/411940?ev=rr

Dance Opera: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Danc...release/1475906

A probably a far from complete list of compilations but nice to see how many got released:

Syntonic
http://www.discogs.com/Various-Risi...n/release/86770
http://www.discogs.com/Carl-Cox-FAC.../release/684169
http://www.discogs.com/Various-Proj...se/145186?ev=rr
http://www.discogs.com/Various-Tran.../release/736183
http://www.discogs.com/Various-Risi...ease/4468?ev=rr
http://www.discogs.com/Various-Tech.../release/155766

This is also pretty good but you could argue its more techno.

I recommend you pick something completely new to you so you don't have high expectations. ;)

To my knowledge, the 'Trance guys' you are referring to who are popular today weren't playing (or producing) out in the first generation of Trance, with the exception of Oakenfold. Oakenfold is one of (although not the only) the last remaining pop DJs who was there (and playing those types of records) when people started using the word Trance to describe House & Techno records. You probably want to check out old mixes by Oakenfold. Also check out mainland DJs like Taucher, Simon Shurey, Mario de Bellis, Mijk Van Dijk...there were loads of them.

I read somewhere Tiesto was involved in the rave scene as a Gabber House DJ (referred to as Rotterdam in Toronto) in the early 90's, but don't quote me on it. I didn't see him booked at the infamous Technodrome in Milton Keynes (only mainland guy I remember may have been Mike Dierickx if he was in fact the same guy as Aggressor), but this doesn't mean Tiesto wasn't playing the mainland European raves that early in the scene. I'm not sure on Armin and Ferry.
