Hello fellow TAers...

I work for a major videogame media company (IGN Entertainment) heading up video for one of its properties, and just worked at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) for the last week and just got back into San Francisco tonight.

Nintendo announced its next console (Wii U) and show off it's f'n insane controller. And it's COMFORTABLE, as insane as the controller is. And the third-party companies (EA, Activision, Capcom, Konami, everyone else) are in love with it...<

Anyhow, just watch the first part of this video where it talks about the controller and you can imagine the possibilities...

Sony also gave more details of its next handheld, the PlayStation Vita, and it's going to be cheap for all the power it has ($250 for wifi, $300 for wifi + 3G...with AT&T though). Handheld is pretty awesome w/ amazing graphics.

Microsoft was a bit of a thud. A lot of solid games, but nothing special at the show. They tried to do too much.

It would be easy to badmouth nintendo for yet another gimmick. But really...when you think about it, they're just proving that they're once again the best console maker out there.

Because honestly, when the only thing you improve on a console from one generation to the next is the graphics/processing power, you will only take the gaming experience so far. Eventually you're going to hit a dead end. You really do have to innovate in other ways as well, as nintendo proved with the wiimote.

So i'm going to look at the WiiU and not judge it until it's had a chance to prove itself.

I'm actually pretty impressed with the imagination shown with this thing.

I'm of the mind that the single greatest improvement a console maker can make to it's systems is with the controller and UI, and with this WiiU thing, I like all of the possibilities of using that second in-hand screen and some of the cool things shown in the ad demo. Something as small as showing your inventory in Zelda on the touch-screen for quick-selection is huge, and it avoids the need for menu jumping, and although it would be a shame if that were its ONLY use, it's still really cool. The use of the controller to play baseball, or for zooming in in shooters is really cool to me as well...

Knowing Nintendo, they'll put it to good use, and release a whole slew of updates to all their best franchises, along with a few 3rd-party gems to fill out it's lifespan. I'm definitely giving this thing a chance.

Yea I'll probably get one as well. I just hope they are putting some decent hardware in this thing. It better be faster than the current 6 year old glorified dvd players or I'll probably have a change of heart. The novelty will wear off fast.
