| I think I recognise your name, so welcome back. Only I wish you wouldn't compress your master channel so much because it sounds ugly (not to mention SoundCloud is only 128 kbps). If you could upload a higher quality MP3 without the limiting I could delve into more advice on the mixing... |

We went through this last time Atlantis. I am not limiting or compressing the master channel.
I have eq on it - Should i turn it off? That means id have to alter the dynamics of the rest of the song . . . |

Really, I find that VERY hard to believe because it sounds louder than the A State Of Trance 2011 album I'm listening to now, and that's beyond loud. Just listen to the hat around 1:12...that sounds way beyond compressed. If you're not compressing/limiting the master channel, maybe you just have the volume turned up too high? |

Just to get it comfortable to listen to, I had to turn down the volume on my sound-cloud and my head-phone volume. My headphone's been resting, while working, at around 50%, or so. While the song is pretty, the hats are still quite shrill - even at a lower volume. |

| Taking the limiter off makes a monumental difference in listenability. The kick as well as the bass-line could actually come up with a little more prominence in the mix. Apart from that, however, it's very pretty. |

Having a limiter set at +6 dB still means that the increased output will be limited by at least that much to allow for the additional volume.
Anyway your trebles sound a bit extreme at times, particularly at the start and in the hats at 1:13. In fact the whole mix sounds harshly compressed at this point (not talking about limiting - just compression on any channels or sub groups).
I wonder if cutting some bass out of the cymbal at 2:25 with a high-pass filter would be a good thing.
I think the kick just sounds too lo-fi at 3:10, and the bass too boomy with not enough clarity. EQ would help solve the latter.
I think in general there are still a lot of holes left to fill, and if you used EQ a little more you'd be able to make the mix more fulfilling. Do turn the volume down and listen at a lower level if you aren't already, and this should become more apparent. |

| Thanks for the analysis. Generally eq is my strong point, taking the limiter off made it clear that a lot needed changing in that respect. Should I turn all compressors off for the mixdown? And add as necessary after? |

Sounds like you don't know how to really use a compressor. I would use them minimally until you do. Or I don't know. But the hats are really shrill, what kind of ratios are you using? Attack? Release? All this plays into how it will sound. It's a cool idea for a track with cool elements, but the hats sear through the mix.
edit: listening to this, the ideas are there, and i think the presentable would be vastly improved with better mixing down. i would advice you to remember that compression ratios are multiplicative. so, your compressor on your hat sound should be like 1:1 or 1:2, and your buss something similar, so by the time it reaches the end, it's not like 10:1 or something resembling limiting, like you have now. I suspect this is the actual problem. |

| Listing to the first version, it's an accomplshed track mate. Just watch the crunchy limiting which sort of sets up an oscillated feel - easy to fix though. Have you tried parallel compression set ups? |

| I really enjoyed this, though the unmastered version does sound significantly better than the one with the limiter on it. I do think it could have more of a swing but I'm not sure if you're going for a really "housey" sort of vibe. Either way I enjoyed the track, though I do feel like there are some places that could use some fleshing out. For instance, the drop after the final build is really anticlimactic, the build is significantly more exciting than what you were actually building to. |
