it's not the synths that suck, it's the patches. You just have to tweak the knobs right ;)

what knobs might those be?

...it takes A LOT of time to become a good synth programmer!

This link directs you to a site that explains a little bit of synth programming:

http://archive.keyboardonline.com/f...rum/index.shtml

Just download the synth and follow there directions.

I haven't found other sites like these but there are books that explain it well in case you are interested. Use this link to take a look at a synthesis book that explains it:

if you want your own original sounds, you will have to learn
about synth programming...
But if you want just some good sounds to begin
search for
Reason Refills on lycos, on yahoo or on kazaa, you also find new sounds at www.reasonstation.net !

There are lots of sites with new Sound
for Reason with trance leads, drum&bass loop, hiphop construction kits (...), natural instruments. There are also commercial Refills
available...just search (...) and you will find !

try the LinPlug Delta III, I picked it up yesterday.

Decent routing options, 4 oscillators, 30(?) waveforms, within those oscillators you can blend any 2 waveforms... dual filter, 8 filter modes, 2 FX modules, all organized very well + some of the default patches actually sound good. Once I figure out the intricacies of the synth.. I reckon it will be damned powerful! (did I mention modest CPU usage?? :D ) <-edit: this thing beats the pants off of subtractor.

then of course there are the mainstays, your FM7, Pro52, Absynth..

Another program I picked up the other day is from Big Tick, its called Angelina. It's a formant pad synth, 2 dual(blend) oscs, 20 waveforms (vowel sounds) breath controller, X/Y morphing pad, and a nice visual envelope. It was also supposed to come with an FX version, that formant-o-fies the input.. but mine didn't :/. Generates warm tasty pads.. mmmm pie

I also use something really crude: MDA JX-16.
its basically just a JX-10 engine with a spiffed up GUI and some added sync to clock features.(doesn't it come with cubase?) If you make an array/layer of 2 or 3 of these slightly detuned, EQ the mid-highs, and play with the envelopes, you can generate a searing 'trance lead' sound.

Too bad my FM7 crashes all the damn time now :/
