Just bought a lexicon u22 interface. And i'm trying to use my 4.1 powered computer speakers with it, until I buy some active monitors. when I plug them into the balanced output of the interface, I can't hear the bass coming out the sub. When i use the headphone socket it works fine. Is the interface faulty or do I need active monitors?

When you say the headphone socket works, do you mean it works using headphones OR it works when connected to your 4.1 speakers?

Afaik typical computer speakers are active! i used to have a pair of cheap logitech ones & i'm sure you didn't need to connect them to an amp:conf:

Does your sub have any crossover controls?

The headphone output should give you a signal reasonably close to the standard line level output from the main speaker outs, so theoretically there shouldn't be a difference...have you any way to test it with another speaker setup?

When I plug in the 4.1 speakers in the headphone socket it works fine. My sub doesn't have any crossover controls, just a volume control. When I use the balanced outputs on the interface, there is only a slight bass coming from the sub. I'll see if I can get some monitors next week and give it a try.
