Couldn't see that anyone else had posted about this so, taken from the Matt Hardwick forums...

Matt Hardwick said...
After spending most of my adult life traveling the world and playing at the world’s leading club events and festivals, I have decided to call it a day and hang up the headphones for good.

As some of you will recall, and as a result of other commitments in my life, last year I decided to pull back from full time touring. Whilst the intention then was to continue to play key selected events and festivals, it has since become apparent to me that I now have to commit all of my time and energy to the alternative career choice I have made.

I have enjoyed an amazing career during the halcyon years of dance music culture, I have traveled to every corner of the globe and have met some fantastic people along the way. I can honestly say that I feel privileged and honored to have been a part of a great scene. I have never had aspirations beyond just playing music and having some fun along the way.

I’d like to thank every person who ever came down to see me play and showed support for what I do. It has meant the world to me.

I have retained 3 further dates in my diary. There will be Glastonbury on 26 June and then my final UK gig will be the Ministry of Sound the following week on 1 July, with the curtain closer in Moscow the following night on 2 July. I will however continue fully with my commitments on the A&R front and generally with Kill the Lights.

Once again, thanks so much for your support over the years and hopefully I'll catch up with some of you on the dance floor at some point in the future....

Bit of a shame IMO, he was always one of my favourite of the big trance DJs. Maybe it was because he spent so long as a Gatecrasher resident, but he always knew how to work a big room, no matter what time he was on. Even though I've moved away from really listening to trance these days, I'd always be happy to see Matt.

His set at Glasto is at 11am before Mark Knight :wtf:, which is a bit of a shame, but I think I will make the effort to drag myself out of my tent to see it.

I actually thought he officially retired last year :conf:

But more to the point, yes it's certainly a shame. Matt was an incredibly talented DJ, his residency years at Gatecrasher were obviously the most memorable, but not matter where he played, what time slot he played or who he was backing up that night, he always delivered.

Anyone can bash out a trance set, but Matt always did so with great progression and great taste.

I think I'll stick on some old Gatecrasher CDs tonight and remember the good times :)

.....and if I'd of known earlier that he was at MOS in a week or so, I would of popped down :(

He also did some good work as a producer, along with Oli and Mark...

At least you'll catch him at Glasto, though.

This is true, but there part of me that doesnt want to. Im not sure I want my last memories of the man to be a half empty tent at 11am in a soggy field in Somerset. It should be a dark big room, peak time, if you see what I mean.

But yes I will take it, sorry for sounding a little ungrateful there :p

Agree on the production side, this is probably my fave involving him...

Ian
guy who had a ton of respect from the old gc goers and put out some good sets. Don't blame him though with the way the music has gone, as he says, he's played through the best days of trance and what's left isn't the same anymore. good luck to him in his new work.

on a related note, is there any link for this promo set from 2003, i think. i originally got it of this very website when there were still mixes on the front page, but ive lost it since.

it lasted about an hour and had reysan khan - shiatsu and agnelli&nelson - holding on to nothing in it. any help?

And this is based on your extensive experience of seeing Matt DJ?

I don't actually have (or even know of) that many recorded live sets from him, with the exception of a few radio 1 gigs that he did.

I've mainly just got all of his Gatecrasher CDs. If anyone knows of any live sets outside of radio 1, I would be more than happy to hear from you ;)
