Calv, I think it's always been thus. Look, Marilyn Monroe was not the best actor of the time yet she was a publicity conduit, and that puts bums on seats, it really is that simple.

People maoned about high grossing actors like Arnie and Brue Willis claiming they did not deserve thier fame and fortune as they were just hunks of meat with little acting depth, but again what they were is publicity conduits.

We just have to get over this notion that only 'true' and 'pure' artistes should be King. In the end Tiesto brings enough fun and a certain experience to a willing public, so there is no mystery and nothing unwarranted.

Junk food is often loved too!

You raise good points, and frankly, it's hard to tell what would happen if the more often referred to as 'pure' artists were more commonly accepted/were 'mainstream', but almost certainly a counter culture would always exist. still wish this wasn't the case though! reminds me of the sickening feeling I got when I saw that MIley Cyrus Nirvana cover...

$20m a year. I love this sort of crap.

It happened to Judge Jules back int he day as well. He was doing some documentary and a PR company was trying to hype it so got the sun to do an interview.

next thing you know, even Jules himself is surprised to learn that he apparently earns £100,000 per set.

The most a Dj has ever been paid was Junior Vanquey for his final set (ever) at MOS in london, and he got paid £10,000 per hour for a near 10 hour set.

I think technically, Tiesto made more money from his stadium gig, Tiesto in Concert as he was essentially the promoter, and took the majority of the ticket sales (35,000 x $50 = $1.75m).

He probably makes a couple of million a year from merchandise, but even then, I think $20m per year is exaggerated by at least $10m, and I'm not even talking about taxes and expenses.

Ive heard of WAY bigger sums than that JV guy. on NYE sets for big namers ive heard of them making a couple of hundred thousand pounds etc. for 3-4 hour sets. im sure all of these could be just rumours as its not like any of us are the accountants of these big namers.

Don't blame that on the dutch. Their sound came from being taken out to "techno" clubs while working in Australia. ing Aussie's fault :p

I'm not blaming it on anyone. I'm just saying that's the name I'm identifying it as. It's dirty dutch house, I've heard a ton of people call it that. Gar-bage. Regardless if who is to blame I don't have a better way of describing it. I love the Dutch.

Allegedly, Joel (the mau5) is commanding $100k for large gigs and festivals.

Not bad for a TA!

Tiesto is playing a gig here at a very small venue in Hollywood very soon, with tix costing $100 a go and only 800 capacity.

It is probably already sold out. That's $80,000 right there and he's probably keeping at least half that. Not bad for a few hours work in your local club.

This is nothing new. Major artists like Tiesto, Armin and so on have been pulling in 6 figures for 4-5 gig tours in Australia for years.

I suppose what we're getting down to is the "universal order"...life isn't FAIR. The most talented (i realise that's a subjective term) do not always prosper due to market forces ie if you don't bring in the $$ you're not worth anything as a commodity. Life is also very much down to luck & being in the right place at the right time.

Monroe, Arnie & Bruce all had 1 thing in common; the right project. Some like it hot, terminator & die hard were all star platforms. It all came together on the big screen & you couldn't take your eyes off them! none of them could claim to be the next richard burton/bette davis but i suppose you could argue that nobody else could of played the parts better than them also :)

Tiesto, KFC & Coke all belong to the lowest common denominator within society, they pander to the "quick fix" crowd who want like you say a good time, nothing less nothing more & i can't lie & say i haven't at one time or another been a part of it because i have, we all have right;)

Marketing, brands, buzz words, portfolio's, usps yada yada all leave me extremely cold tbh. I don't like the recent development of music, i don't like the direction it's taking & tiesto is just a symptom of a much bigger problem imo:(

PS yes i am a horrible snob i admit it:stongue:

Don't forget Harrison Ford, perhaps the biggest example of being in the right place at the right time.

This 'insider snobbery' pervades all spheres. I got quite into gardening and sure enough the insider cool gang hate on classic plants that the masses like. You don;t care what is an 'in plant' you just want a plant that suits you on an infomral non too depp level, just as a music consumer wants. Meeting that lay persons everyday need is an art in itself, all too easy to dismiss as cheesy mass market pandering.

The point about the tastes of the masses comes down to accesibility. A layperson just wants something that is easy to engage with and easy to 'like'.
My kids can't stand my musak, they want Gaga, Chris Browne and D Pain. My 'boom boom' sh1t is inconsequential and irrelevant.

Nice, well, if you have time, I'll show you. Mostly non-EDM, but a close margin. Lots of it was when I was a boy. Gonna pass out for the night now tho. :)
