I used to have so much respect for postal workers, more than any other government institution. Never any lost items, delivery is usually prompt, friendly, convenient, etc. etc. This strike, however, made me realize that they are just another union/government institution that doesn't give a about people but only concerned about itself. Postal service is very critical to many Canadians - average folks, companies, groups. Basically the government and the union have hijacked this important service for their little game from which there will only be losers. They need to realize that this is not a game, that this strike is hurting many Canadians.
Government negotiators have a good point - by volume, postal service has declined across Canada in recent years - while the costs are going up. Postal workers get paid very well; they have benefits, paid vacation of 2 WEEKS, and other perks. They intentionally played around with rolling strikes that resulted in millions $$$ of losses for Canada Post which effectively forced the government to lock the workers out. I can only dream of an easy job like that, as I am struggling with my current under-paying job and going back to university.
Note that rural postal workers are not on strike.
I depend on Canada Post because I purchase frequently online; right now I got several items stuck in transit, most importantly my new top-of-the-line headphones from Amazon.com (USA) to replace a broken/dying set. I might end up going to a local -shop and buy a pair of Skullkandy earphones to keep my sanity?! :disbelief

Conversion to paperless billing has spiked in the last few weeks due to the strike. This is business that the post office will never get back. Good work unions! You guys are awesome!
Now quit holding Canadian small businesses hostage with your petulant demands and get back to work! Realize that like you, a blacksmith or a milkman would consider themselves extremely fortunate to have a job in that field right now. |

If I remember correctly I believe the gal I know has 5 or 6 weeks paid vacation, due to her seniority. |
