Google, Youtube and the art of picking a username

Many years ago I signed up for a Youtube account using my yahoo email, I recently switched to google for my email, but now when I visit Youtube it won't auto log me in keeps insisting I create a new account with my gmail account. This would be fine if I could transfer my old account to it but it seems you can't. Anyone else annoyed by Google insisting on linking your gmail account to Youtube? I assume Google must have bought Youtube?
I also don't like how you can never change your username in Youtube. You struggle to find some sort of unique name that hasn't been taken and then later down the road you don't want to be called "PinkBanana0019" anymore. |

Although, only recently have Google started to force users to use gmail accounts on Youtube. |
