In the 80s I used to mess up my older brother by whistling into another phone in the house during the handshaking phase (the noise you hear) - I always had time to do this because it was pulse dialing - lol - It would keep ing up the attempted connect or it would work but you'd be forced to connect a lower speed (i.e. 300bps or 1200bps) because the whistling was confusing the modem into assuming you were on a 'noisy' line.
