It's a big faux pas for promoters to start roll calls.

Why is this :conf:

^^^ I've only seen a few of them started by promoters but they were ultimate cheese. Like the same over-hype and advertising of events they create on FB and the event section but taken to the boards. I'm sure if there they were common place it'd feel more like spam than roll calls.

This is a fallacy. Just because there are events in the event thread, doesn't mean they represent what TOTAs are interested in. There are hundreds of events that go on in Toronto every weekend. If I posted them all in the event thread, then there would be a 4/800 = .005% response rate.

To get nerdy: a more meaningful way of measuring participation in Roll Calls would be to take the number of users on all Roll Calls posted in a given weekend and divide that by the number of active users in that weekend. Then compare this measure to, say, Canada Day weekend in 2007. Although I'm sure no one would care to do this. :p

I do think you would find that the participation rate would be less now than it was in previous years.

To be honest I prefer Review threads over Roll Calls

TOTA isn't the close community it once was and I think that shows in the lack of roll calls and review threads. The TOTA community doesn't seem to care about meeting each other, except for those within their little groups and this can be arranged on facebook now. The best part about review threads was reading the shout outs to TOTAs.

Please explain how Morty's point is a fallacy and yours is not. You're speculating that there wouldn't be 1 more response if there were 771 more event threads, no?

Not like I care, I just think it's weird that with so much going on, there's very little interest in seeing who's meeting up for what anymore. There's between 10-15 solid headliners at different parties this weekend which makes me think that there should be a higher response (rollcall) rate.

The leprechaun is an endangered species now so McDonalds can't grind them up into the shakes. McDonalds has been working hard on creating artificial leprechauns but I don't think they will taste the same.

It is less but there are more lurkers now. The thing is, once smart phones, myspace, twitter and facebook came along it made staying in contact within groups a MUCH easier activity -- in turn, people now have other outlets to communicate their thoughts.

However, none of the above can offer what a messageboard does in terms of discussion on a topic where ANYBODY can put in their $0.02 'anonymously' -- with social networks most tend to stick to 'discussing/expressing' safe topics/POVs on their walls / just look for an ego boost(aka 'likes') amongst their 'friends'. Some of these same people though cry foul when they post their views here and are torn apart... and then retreat back to the safety of facebook where they can delete wall posts/'de-friend' at will.
