Shure M-447s or Ortofons??

hi all.. i've heard good things bout both of these. I was talking to one person and they said the ortofon silvers eat up ur vinyls. For all of you that have ortofons, is this true? I've also heard great things bout the shure m447s but i dont want the hassle of installing the cart and having to measure all the stuff. The ease of putting on the ortofons is a definate plus but the price of shures is very appealing.
Let me know your thoughts guys. I need to buy some needles soon that dont ruin my vinyls so i can start spinning!!! |

It really depends on what you will do.
Get the M44-7 if you're going to do heavy scratching.
If you're going to mix, get Ortofons (Pro's or Dj's). Saying they are heavy has nothing to do with it. You set the amount of pressure the stylus applies on the vinyl with the counterweight.
In comparison to the m44-7 other needles (not only Ortofons) will wear records faster, becuase m44's need a pretty little weight.
But it's nothing to worry about. There's a reason why the ortofons are the most used needles nowadays. They're quality, that's the reason... |

get Ortofon Concorde DJs
M44-7's are for heavy duty scratching...the stylus is more at a point which means it will eat your vinyl's away faster than other carts do
of course they rarely ever skip because of this
however my Ortofon Concorde DJs dont skip either ;) |

| see wat i mean bout conflicting reports?? DJ thy says m447s dont wear away ur records as much as other carts while DJ liquid say that m447s do... Does anyone know for sure??? |

first you made no mentions of wanting to scratch with these
so go with 44Gs not 447 which are like the best carts out there for scratching.
the difference is ... that the 447 will lack on the sound quality side, and 44G will lack on the holding the groove of the record side
get some 44Gs |

| hmmm.. i thought this was the tranceaddict forums. When was the last time you heard a trance dj scratch?? :P Unless you're thinking of djs like dj jean who did that horrid scratching with the ppk song. anyway.. no im not planning on scratching.. only simple mixing. |

as stupid as it my reply may have seemed I said so for one reason, haven't you noticed the load of wanabee scratch djs on this forum?

If you got the possibility, try needles out, just like phones or speakers.
M44-7's have a very harsh sound, which is very good for turntablism. The M44-G aren't that harsh, but still more than other needles.
I personally like the Ortofon's sound best (there's only one I like equally, the Stanton 680 HP) - and believe me, I've hear lots of needles -, because it has a very smooth sound, just what I need for the music I'm spinning. But that doesn't mean that other people will have the same opinion. I would never get m44-g's for trance, but I would for techno... It's all very subtle.
So if you got the chance, compare some...
As for the M44-7, if you read what I wrote, you'll understand why they are easier on the records. M44-7's can operate well with very little weight, while still having a massive skip resistance. For the same applications, Ortofons and any other needle need more weight (and don't come here saying 2g is working for you're setup, try doing heavy turntablism with 2g on Ortofons).
Scratching isn't necessarily bad with trance. You just need to know what you are doing (Jean obviously doesn't). |

| Not necessarily, I've heard excellent scratches on trance (I remember hearing a very good one in one of Plastic Angel's sets). |
