So what effect does changing the length of a written note have, if not on the actual duration of the sound?

it depends on how much heroin.

Timing (how much time is left before the next note is played). A half note means you "wait" longer than a quarter note.

and do more heroin.

with percussion, it depends on how frequently you want to hear the sound. if you want to hear it continuously through the count, write-in a roll.

listen to tool and dream theater...on heroin.

This is actually why I started this thread. I've been listening to too much Dream Theater. I ordered some more of their CDs from discogs.

What's to stop someone thinking the first three bars are actually in all the same time signature of 9/4?

You have to listen to the way the melodies are structured, where the "natural" ending seems to be. Is it after 5 beats or somewhere else?

Also, I couldn't get some of Tool's songs if my life depended on it.

With four to the floor dance music, I don't even understand how you can tell it's 4/4 with out looking at a sequencer and seeing exactly how many beats there are in a song. What's to stop you counting 1,2,3,4,5 beats in a row instead of 1,2,3,4 to get the time signature, and surmising that it's 5/4?
