Essential Mix 7/2/2011 - Above & Beyond
View this Thread in Original format

Anyone else listened to it? Thoughts?

I've given it a couple listens and although I think its quality, it had the impossible task of following up on 2004's Essential Mix of the Year. The first 5-6 minutes did a good job of pulling me in then lost me until the set found its rhythm. Something I'll keep around for awhile.

EDIT: Jesus have my music tastes gone down that far...rhetorical question

waste of bandwith

Its in crap....its A&B doing nothing but whoring off Anjuna tunes

Mixes like this is everything thats wrong with an Essential mix

Essential mixes used to take a 2 hour musical journey showcasing the artist as a DJ not as somone who wants to self promote their work

kinda like the Simon Patterson E-mix a few years ago

Suppose you are right now that I've looked at the tracklist. I'm a huge fan of the dreamy crap, which I realize is Anjuna's signature sound. This does a decent enough job letting me drift away, whether good or bad.

I'll check out Simon Patterson's mix...

Well, in A&B's defense, they're always whoring out and promoting their own Anjuna stuff.

as any successful DJ with a successful label does...seems like a pretty good business move to me. Especially since the Anjuna sound is exactly what the A&B crowd wants to hear. They're appealing their audience, as they should

Honestly, I dunno how A&B got so big as DJ. Their DJ sets have been a lot more miss than hit. And they've always been that way. That said, the party atmosphere when they play is always great/insane. But due to that, I think people raise the level of the quality of A&B's sets when they hear them live than they actually are.

I have only seen them making a floor go nuts the entire night once. Other times their sets are filled with too many sleeper tracks that are great for listening to at home or in your car, but just are just not good dancing material for clubs. Not enough energy.

That all said, I'd still go see them in clubs. But for the atmosphere. Because I've learned not t expect much energy in their music.

Its the reverse for me. Never had a bad night at one of their shows and its probably double digits in various countries. Out of the majority of recorded sets I've heard only a few are really enjoyable to listen in the car. The do have some floor killers but a lot of fluffy songs I cannot stand.

Like I said I'm in love with the first couple minutes. For ME it transports me away but that doesn't last for long. The set was sort of what expected and was refreshing in the sense it wasn't massive bangers like every single essential mix this year (still Calvin Harris at the top). At the end of the day I'm just like everyone else and prefer a Markus set but think these dreamy, sleeper sets have their place.

if they are appealing to their audience then maybe their E-mix would have been better suited if it was aired on TATW since thats their audience.....

a Proper E-mix should take one on a journey, even though its 2 hours

i.e.

Planet Funk - Inside All The People [Deep Dish Instrumental Mix)
Kelso - Half Lit Wood
X-Press 2 - Smoke Machine
Cass & Slide - Glad I Ate Her
Vaiio - Rapture
Solicitous - Furthermost
Chiller Twist - Strings Unlimited
Infennal Machine - Realistic
Tiesto & Junkie XL - Obsession
Midfield General - Coatnoise [Dave Clarke Mix)
DJ Tiesto - Lethal Industry
Binary Finary - Niterider [Ca-Lo's Tribal Mix]

First two times I saw them, they were so amazing. They've been kind of a disappointment since. Not bad, but like you said, they play so much stuff that just doesn't work in the club/dancefloor.
