Sympatico High Speed & Ultra Question (pg. 2)

They don't own the backbone though.. companies like Worldcom do and they charge for usage of their pipes. |

i have a question for sympatico high speed users
does anyone have a modem that will actually allow them to have more than 2 computers online at any given time?
we got dsl when it first first came out so we have this old ty modem, so we ask sympatico if we can get a newer one that can have more people online (4 computers in the house that need to be online almost all the time...3 college/university students + dad works from home) and they said they can send us a new modem, but they can't guarentee it will be one capable of assigning more internal ip's or some |

what you need is a router... not a new modem.
or like I do here, i have a computer running 24/7 that shares the internet to the other computers thru a hub. Its more secure (a bit) and I can do plenty of stuff with that server.
Your best bet is a router tho... |

though im not to sure on the exacts
i believe that sympatico assigns internal IPs for each user on the network, and because our modem is the first one they came out with...it can only assign 2 internal IPs at the same time
or some
and we tried to set up on computer as a server for the rest of the household, but we weren't successful
i don't think it is capable through sympatico...although you will never know for sure considering their customer service people are complete jokes and don't have a clue what they're talking about |

i don't think it is capable through sympatico...although you will never know for sure considering their customer service people are complete jokes and don't have a clue what they're talking about |
obviously you did something wrong along the way...
you try to dial from each computer... which isn't the way you're supposed to set up a router.
and for the server, you need a computer with 2 network cards, and preferably win2000 server. the modem is hooked directly to the server on one network card and the other network card is hooked to the hub or router... you then set win2000 to share the net connection of the first network card to the second... its a bit complicated but work flawlessly over here. I have a celeron 300 as a server with 384 ram on win 2000 and I have 3 other computers hooked on the net (the server is the 4th). |

i don't take care of the networking in my house, so you can forward all criticism to him ;)
so if we set up a single computer as a server, can we still use the pc or would that conflict with the other pc's connected to it? |

fiberoptics is the way to go ppl
don't have to deal with the ass service of bell and rogers
oh yeah, for those that don't know
rogers has 2 networks
one on the motorolla network and the other on the doctsis network
for those who have the doctsis network, it is drastically faster than the normal motorolla network because there are less people using the modem and rogers does not usually issue them. but, unfortunately, they capped doctsis, so i can only go around 210 kps off web sites instead of the non capped 3 hundreds. no body can every live with a 5 gig cap, and if you download beyond that u have to pay extra money. rogers will soon be issuing a cap ONLY for the motorolla network, only a 25 gig limit per month.
whats the resolution??? FIBEROPTICS
and rogers can go shove sticks up its ass for being such lazy s |

huhz ? i always thought Bell built the infastructure tho?? don't they own the lines and companies like Sprint would lease these lines and offer service on top since itz all deregulated ??

whooa.. i wish it was that easy too. but the cost of building a citywide fiber-optic network would cost a fortune and when those costs get downloaded onto us that can get pretty steep. i think a wireless solution for highspeed will come before a fiber optic one.. |

yes wireless is the futur
no one in their right mind will ever lay around another set of cables city wide... its waaaaay to expensive and complicated. Wireless can have bandwidth of gigabytes... the equipment has to drop in price tho before we start seeing companies shipping littles antennas or dishes to your home. |

| forget the wireless IMO ... come on people we're in Canada , it's snowing during the winter and raining during the summer , i don't wanna see my satellite connection being slow because of weather problems ... |

| not all wireless connections are dependent on line of sight and weather conditions tho .. some can operate fine in almost any type of environment. they just have to pick the right standards and support the infastructure. i think itz way more feasible than terrestrial lines which will always have a bandwidth capacity. |

weather isn't much of a problem, its more a line of sight thing... but this could be corrected with a good infrastructure.

No you can use it normally, but remember it has to stay 24/7 open if you want an internet connection all the time. And if that computer crashes others will loose their connections (duh). |
