| So I may have gotten the idea like so many others about how hard is it really to throw a party, get a venue, dj , promote etc either in NYC or NJ. Throwing one in the city would be ideal but seems difficult, but how hard is it to book a big to semi big name dj get a venue and then have it be a success. I am assuming that alot has to do with the dj itself "if you bring them they will come " kind of mentality but aside from that with so many social networks out now it does not seem to be very difficult to get the word out. So who here throws parties and found it to be a success or quit after the first attempt. Just wondering since like most people here I have access to people in different industries and just wondering if it will be worth it to pull them all together and make something happen. |

If you don't know what you are doing its rather difficult and usually results in failure.
I've been part of a few teams who threw parties in the past, and I'm now throwing my very own this Friday. Will let you know how it goes :p |

| Good luck, I have a few contacts in Syracuse that also want to get involved and maybe try something over there first but were in an infancy stage so just wanted to throw out here on this forum. Which party is yours in the events page? |

My friends have thrown some successful parties with just local talent. They're going to try and branch out with some real headliners moving forward. I think that's been their hardest part though...actually contracting a headlining DJ. With just local talent, so little of the cost falls on the talent, most of the cost is venue/sound. So entry has obviously been cheap which helps encourage people to come.
But ya, I think having to increase ticket prices for the increase in cost as well as being unknown and having trouble negotiating with headlining worthy DJs has given them some snags. |

Throwing events is very hard, but it all depends on what kind of events. I know when I started Mid-Atlantic Digital, our purpose was to bring international dj's that I liked that don't get a chance to come.
Some events we were very successful, others we broke even, and some we lost. There are so many factors that can hurt you and help you. It really is a gamble.
As for getting international dj's it really isn't that hard. Having the right venue helps, but getting the right venue is the hard part. Big venues expect a big return, and bar guarantees can become costly, because not only do you have to cover the cost of the event, but you have to hope you make enough at the bar to cover that. Also it's tough to get a good date at a big venue since they are in demand.
When we did out event at Cielo, we were only offered sunday's. So we took the risk. We took a hit with that event, and for future events at Cielo we had lined up some big names like, Nick Chagall, Rank 1, Dj Remy, etc, but it made no sense to continue a sun party. We tried to convince them to let us do this on a thurs, but they didn't want to offer that day, only sun. Shows you how hard it is to get a venue on the right day, even if you have some solid names.
I would of loved to have kept going with the international dj's, but it takes a lot of time, effort, and money to organize all of this. I just decided my time would best spent if I just concentrated on working on productions.
I think local events are what's needed now, and there are some very good ones, and I have some planes for some as well, but even local events take a lot of time and effort. I think local events are more beneficial to the scene. Since nyc has some great local talent. |

Everyone always say bring _________ and I will def come but they don't understand that you can't always bring out the big guns right away lol
Support from your people overtime allows the promoter to do big things and bring the people you want. People want you there to support their party, not just because you are booking _______ dj but sadly most knowledgeable clubbers follow DJ's and not events. Starting a solid following is very important and then you can start booking the people they want to see.
Also I've seen this happen all too many times...where everyone wants a certain DJ to come, the DJ is booked and no one shows lol oh the politics of throwing parties.... NY is a tough crowd and just because a certain DJ is popular in say Europe for example... doesn't mean they are widely known or will work in NY.
It's very risky, and so many different factors come into play...but if you aren't willing to take the risk.... quit while you're ahead. |

nothing urks me more than seeing on facebook: "LET'S BRING LEON BOLIER TO NYC OMGAWD!"
even with proper planning, promotion, and legitimate pull from a name like that it's a crapshoot as to how many people REALLY want to see leon bolier. people don't realize how small a niche trance is. |
