ASIO over remote desktop. Is it possible?

From the reading I have done, ASIO will not transmit over remote desktop. Non-ASIO audio transmits fine by using the Microsoft RDP Audio driver when remote audio settings are set to "Play on this Computer" on the Resource Tab on the Remote Desktop Connection window.

Does anyone know of a way of getting an ASIO interface, in my case a Fireface 400, to send it's audio over an RDP connection? I have experimented with trying several different things without success.

What I am trying to achieve here is to be able to remote desktop into my production PC, fire up Cubase, and work on a track while I'm away from home.

Thanks for any ideas.

I don't know, but that sounds terrible!

(sorry, not very helpful...)

I can imagine you would face numerous latency problems to say the least

It's possible, but unfortunately not feasible for a desktop to desktop connection with the typical network cards you'd have installed.

I experimented with this at work, but it doesn't really count because I remoted to one of my blade servers using a 10Gb LAN connection.

Unless you have absurdly fast internet, I'd explore other options. One of the big points of ASIO is low-latency, and by trying to use it remotely, you only defeat the purpose.

Not quite true. a 20mbit (standard business internet connection) should have the bandwidth to allow the data transfer.

You can run asio over RDC - you just need to set "Remote computer sound" to "Bring to this computer", then that should enable the asio settings.

Word of warning though, it's going to be a bitch of a drain on your system processing so don't expect native performance.

Let me know if you run in to problems.

Thanks DJ RANN. I have my settings set as you have described but I get no sound. In addition to my production PC (running XP), I have another PC running XP that I can remote into and I get sound. I figured I'd try to install Cubase on this PC just to see if I could get sound while in Cubase and I cannot. When remoted in, Windows uses the Microsoft RDP Audio driver but while in Cubase, if I go Device Setup, my only options are ASIO Multimedia Driver, what it defaults to that gives me no sound, or I have a 2nd selection in the dropdown, ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Driver. If I try to select this option on either PC, I get the same error:

ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Driver:
An active sound audio port could not be found. Errorcode: FE1-E-0600.

I've Googled and tried a couple of different things such as installing ASIO4ALL and then Virtual Audio Cable but nothing works.

I'm down to try anything if you have other ideas. I've asked this same question on the Steinberg forums but have yet to receive any response.

Thanks!

Here's the solution:

Go in to the settings on RDC and use "leave at remote computer".

That should do it?

by the way you have to be using XP pro on both machines as Home (as standard) does not have the advanced networking options.

Let me know if this works!

Thanks DJ RANN! I see the option you are talking about now on the XP remote desktop connectoid. I see in Windows 7 they changed it to say "Play on remote computer" which does not work.

So the PC I'm connecting to my audio box from must also be XP? That might be the problem because so far, I've only connected using a Windows 7 machine.

I'll try this when I get home and can use 2 XP machines.

Thanks!

No worries - glad to try to help!

I can't really tell you about XP to w7 as I've not tried it but I know it should work on XP pro to XP pro.

There are things that you can do with port mapping etc but I don't want to go there yet in case it's a compatibility issue between XP and W7. Also bear in mind that as standard only W7 Ultimate allows you to network fully with other non ultimate editions of windows (including XP).
